Interesting.
For comparison's sake, a beginners' course for Finnish at a typical North American university's Finnish Studies program often entails about 4 hours in class/tutorial weekly over two semesters which means between 25 and 30 weeks depending on the university or about 100 hours worth of sitting/working in class.
Based on the experience with my beginners' Polish course of the same duration at a university where we completed "Czesc, jak sie masz?" which covers up A1 and A2, this means that you guys developed approximately the same competency of a typical student in a beginners' language class in about a third of the time. Your discipline, multilingual backgrounds, and tapping into a network of like-minded people explains this difference.

In 35 hours??? I didn't follow the whole story, but that seems very little, doesn't it? I mean, "30 days => A2" is impressive, but if it's only 35 hours, it sounds like some kind of magic. Really makes me want to take part in that kind of things!

Yes, 35 hours. The nice thing is that you can see exactly what we did from the 6 Week
Challenge logs, e. g.
http://6wc.learnlangs.com/stats/user/Junesun
Click on "tags" and you can see for example that most of my time was spent on Assimil,
but also a lot on vocabulary and only 90 minutes on pronunciation. Actually, what I
think helped me the most for this test was practising writing, that is coming up with
my own sentences in variation from Assimil or trying to answer typical questions and
looking up (and later studying) all words that I needed to express myself. I think
Assimil isn't really suitable if you only have 35 hours and I scored less because it
didn't for example cover the "ask for directions" situation that any other textbook
would have managed to cover in that amount of time. I'd be curious to see where
somebody could get if he spent 35 hours mostly on Teach Yourself, Colloquial or any
other approach. 35 hours on a conversation-focussed (with teachers) approach would be
very interesting, too and I might try that in the future.

It was 35 hours within a 30-day period.
And yes, you could say we did a bit of magic too. :)

Sure, I understood it was within 30 days. Was the 35h a constraint you guys had set for yourselves, as an experiment? Why not have spent 30 days with more intensive studies on Finnish?
(answer: because you're busy with other languages, I suppose. But as it was an "accelerated challenge"..)
Thanks for both your answers.

We wanted to settle on a feasible amount of hours that all could fulfill. We initially set out to do 45, but we
then readjusted to 35. We were all busy with other commitments, yes.

If it was just a matter of cutting back on other languages, I could have done that.
However, there is also work and family to consider. Studying > 1 hour a day on average
when you have a full-time job and kids like Arekkusu is something admirable.
