By learning more about the cultural codes, so that we know when we have no cause to be offended, or know what to say to avoid offense :-)

I take it you've never been on the London Underground at on a weekday morning? I would be very suprised if some of those trains were less crowded than Tokyo trains.

I've never been on the London Underground at morning rush hour, so I have no idea which is worse, but my
point was that Japanese people tend to be much more tolerant of this closeness. Since Japan is so crowded
I guess they don't really have much choice.

If you exclude Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, England on its own is significantly more densely populated than Japan.

Yeah, in terms of people per square kilometer that's true, but 80% of Japan is uninhabitable mountainous
land, so everyone is crowded together on the few pieces of flat land.

It would never get to that point because British people just aren't that polite. If British people started pushing each other like that on the underground there would be fights breaking out in no time. It seems the Japanese are just far more tolerant and polite.

If a station guard started trying to push people into trains in London, or anywhere else in England they would likely get a bloody nose and a black eye for their efforts.
