Hang in there, Spanky! I too have the FSI, in the Barron's "Mastering French" incarnation, but found that even with that version's relatively attractive cover (it was in colour, at least), it seemed to call for an attitude of Grim Determination. (Is it horribly shallow to be influenced by the appearance of a book?) I had slightly better luck with the Random House/Living Language series. - They don't have the extensive drills that FSI does, which is both a good and a bad thing (I'm sure my French grammar would be far better if I hadn't abandoned the FSI), but they are a lot more accessible to the average non-mime-candidate. There's no rule that says you have to use only one thing; if you'd like to try the RH/LL series, they're available in a full Beginner to Advanced version, an easy-peasy Avoid the mimes version, and even an all-audio audio_french">I'm not in the mood to read French version, the latter two even as e-books. p.s. That’s awesome songlines, thanks – right down to current local library availability!!
The mime industry stands little chance in the face of that sort of support. I will definitely check out (in both senses of that phrase) the recommended material. I am also going to keep digging away at the dusty FSI materials for a while, just to see if my bet with myself as to how far this time I will get with FSI proves correct (spoiler alert: my prediction does not extend to double digits in terms of number of units I will complete before getting distracted or abducted by aliens again). Unfortunately grim determination is not one of my attributes, though ironically, I understand that “Grim Determination” is covered as an advanced topic in mime school. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
