Hi all!
This is my so promised log for Russian at the TAC 2013, team Mir. My main goal for this first more intense year of Russian study is to be able to read textbooks written for Russian speakers without resorting all the time to the dictionary. My story with Russian started several years (and years) before. I made several attempts with different books, like Assimil, New Penguin Russian Course, Learning to Read Russian, Princeton Course but I always got overwhelmed by the amount of new vocabulary. In 2012 I got the chance of studying up to 4 languages on a daily basis and, therefore, after finishing French on a textbook level, I decided to use this open slot for taking part into the Assimil Challenge with Russian. Now I've made Russian into a permanent language for the TAC (even though the challenge technically hasn't ended and Assimil still is my only source). Besides Russian, I'm also doing Norwegian for the TAC (team Viking) and Georgian on a duo with zecchino. I was already studying all of these before the TAC started. In the case of Georgian, I started in January 2012. I also learn Chinese Mandarin on a daily basis, I just don't have a log at HTLAL. Being 4 different languages, that accounts me to improve my linguistic creativity, even though I have a hard time with vocabulary and usually burnout when the daily session is over. My schedule for Russian is the following: 1. Il nuovo russo senza sforzo (currently at lesson 52) 2. Russian without toil 3. Le Russe (2008) 4. Living Language Ultimate Russian Beginner-Intermediate 5. Méthode 90 Russe Then check if I need any more beginner's resources (maybe New Penguin which I could do quickier) 5. Living Language Ultimate Russian Advanced 6. Russianpod101 or Princeton's Russian course at further stages 7. Streetwise Russian 8. A bilingual Russian reader (if any) Then check if I need any more textbook learning (maybe a good grammar with exercises) and proceed to using native materials. That might not happen until the end of 2013 (just sum up the number of Assimil lessons and it will take away all of the work days in 2013), but my goal of being able to read Russian textbooks on Chechen, Mari, Ossetian will be sought after fiercely =D Looking forward to hearing recommendations from you all. Feel free to ask me about suggestions for resources and their usage as well. I hope I can get a standalone microphone and make it work at Skype sessions, in case the problem isn't with my sound card, since as of now, when I plug the headset that has a built-in microphone the sound card does not recognize a microphone at all. Ooh, that's a lot of interesting resources :). I started doing the Assimil challenge with

It seems that we are on a similar path this year: we’re both doing the Assimil Experiment with Il nuovo russo senza sforzo (but you’re progressing so much faster than I am), and we’re on both Team MIR and Team Viking together. Howdy, Expugnator! I know what you mean about being overwhelmed by Russian vocabulary. If
you're looking for a graded reader recommendation, I can recommend this Russian graded reader. It's not bilingual, but it's glossed and the stories are quite interesting. I can't recommend any bilingual readers yet, although I'm planning on trying out Gleb Struve's "Russian Stories" bilingual book. Good luck! 2 persons have voted this message useful | |
