Wow. I find it depressing that so many accredit "For Whom the Bell Tolls" to Metallica
rather than Hemingway and the book they based the damn song on. If I find someone who
accredits "Brave New World" to Iron Maiden I'm gonna throw a fit.

I actually do use "whom", but only when speaking formally. When talking with friends,
my grammar noticeably decomposes, and I will always use "who" for everything except set
phrases. I believe this is because I pay no mind to what I'm saying, and probably also
due to my near constant study of Japanese which has started to leak into my English.
Whenever I'm talking to anyone else though, I'll almost always use "whom" and actually
feel guilty whenever I forget to use it. I'm from Washington State.

Speaking of ignored grammar rules, does anyone want to comment on split infinitives?

You can start throwing a fit without waiting for a reply on this.

Ha, well, if we're going to get into split infinitives, I think the Wikipedia article is quite interesting.

Personally, to me they feel as natural as breathing.

Ach, Aldous Huxley probably stole the phrase from someone else. We're all thieves in this business.

He did indeed:

“O, brave new world
that has such people in't!”

The Tempest, Wm Shakespeare, who himself lifted a bunch of his stuff from others....

A comprehensive academic discussion on the related issue "whomever", from the Amurican version of The Office.

whomever

I go through a lot of Tylenol hearing/seeing "whom" and "whomever" used incorrectly.   I used to take it as a personal affront for some reason; now, I just take the Tylenol...

Don't forget about John Donne! Hemingway didn't invent it either :)

That dialogue from The Office about "whom" cracks me up. I love the hypothesis that it's a made up word to trick people!
