Hello, everyone!
A bit of a late entry for this year's TAC, but we're still in the first month, so I'm calling it good. ;) My languages for this TAC are Dutch and Russian - I may add in Spanish later on, but as time is limited I am holding off on that for now. I'll start with Dutch, as it's the simpler of the two: Dutch This is my first language, but has gotten rusty since I moved to the United States at age 10. I can still understand quite a bit, and can make myself understood, but my vocabulary isn't that great, I could use some work with sentence structure, pronunciation, and intonation, and I just need to have more exposure to it every day. I don't have any specific goals, but I would like to spend at least 30 minutes a day on this. I am currently reading a lot of books (making my way through the Kameleon series right now - I feel it's a good starting point and I already own the books), and watching some news here and there. Exposure is really my goal with this language, for the time being. Russian I took two years of this at university, but haven't used it since I graduated two years ago. I consider myself a beginner at this language. I have a couple courses, grammars, dictionaries, and novels that I'll be using. I haven't figured out a specific technique, but I'd like to get in 30 minutes to an hour every day, more if I can (study time is in short supply with two toddlers to take care of!). I'm hoping to update with progress at least once a week, more if I can. I'll let you all know what I do, observations, and all that jazz. What other books do you read in Dutch, Fiona S.? Reading is my favorite way to maintain Dutch right now too.

I own lots of books from before I moved to America, but most are kids' books: Kameleon Floortje Wolf Dik Trom Kippenvel Harry Potter ... and lots of books about cute little horsies (I was obsessed with horses). I thankfully have enough books I won't get bored reading them for a while. Since I posted this thread rather late yesterday, I didn't get much done with my language studies. No Russian, but I read about 15 pages of "De Kameleon op Jacht" last night. The book isn't hard to read, but I often come across vocabulary I don't recognize (especially when it comes to farm/boating vocabulary. I have just been figuring out what it means from context, but I'm considering starting an Anki deck and actively trying to learn these words. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hmm, I don't really know any of the kids books, but I wish I did. Especially the horse books - who wasn't obsessed

Nog 30 paginas van mijn boek gelezen.
Ik heb alleen een paar dingen geschreven in het Nederlands, maar het is moeilijker dan ik had gedacht. Ik denk dat ik heel veel Nederlands moet schrijven - het is moeilijk om alles correct te spellen en ik weet dat mijn woord orde ook vaak verkeert is. Ik moet gewoon veel oefenen, het kan alleen beter worden. Ik heb vandaag een paar 'niewe' worden geleerd (ik kenden hen wanneer ik jonger was, maar ik had ze vergeten): fundering - foundation loods - barn/warehouse betonnen - concrete kuilgras - grass silage fuiken - traps stropers - poachers Ik ga even denken over hoe ik Anki wil gebruiken, en dan geen die woorden er in. ----- Another 30 pages read from my book. I have only written a couple things in Dutch, but it's harder than I had thought it would be. I think I'm going to need to write a ton of Dutch - it is harder to spell correctly and I know my word order is probably wrong. I just need to practice a lot, it can only get better. I learned a couple 'new' words today (I knew them when I was younger, but had forgotten them). I am going to think about how I want to use Anki, and then those words will go in there. Loods is nota barn but it is used to mean a storage facility for hardware and is usually

In this case I am pretty sure it is used as a warehouse of some kind, that is probably a better definition. The sentence: "Naast een oude, ronde grassilo was een graafmachine bezig zand te schuiven tegen de fundering van een nieuw gebouwde loods." This is happening at a farm, which is why I thought 'barn'. ;) Thanks, I'll amend my post. :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
