(English-only introduction here being an almost absolute beginner.)

I don't remember exactly why I decided to study Swedish; I had very minimal exposure to the language prior to that, never visited the country or knew much about its culture. I guess the only thing related to Swedish I'm familiar with is Nordic mythology, a big passion of mine ever since I was little.

My Swedish adventure began a couple of years ago; I started with Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone, then moved to Assimil. I got somewhere around lesson 40, but eventually stopped since the lessons became too difficult. Last year I hardly studied any Swedish at all. I'm quite surprised that I still remember something XD

In 2015 my main focus is going to be French, closely followed by German so I'm not expecting to make huge progress with Swedish. The only goal I set is to do a little practice everyday. I will give another try to Assimil (this time going at a slower pace, though), use Duolingo, listen to the “Nyheter på lätt svenska” podcast and, if it isn't too difficult, make some short translations every now and then.

Hi!
My name’s M*** and I live in Italy. I studied languages and literature at university. There I only studied English and German, but over the years I’ve worked on my own on several other languages. Now I speak a little French, Spanish, Russian and obviously Swedish.

I don’t know why I’m learning Swedish. Is it enough to say that I love the language and the culture? There are no practical reasons in my life to use Swedish: I’m not married to a Swede nor do I need Swedish in my work, but I enjoy listening to and reading the language. I have few opportunities to speak Swedish, maybe a couple of times every five years when I meet Swedish friends and acquaintances. But that’s ok with me. I’ve never tried to create opportunities to speak Swedish for example with Skype and I think that won’t change this year.

Last year I focussed on the amount of input in my foreign languages (especially English and German), but in 2015 I want to focus more on the quality of my efforts. That’s why I plan to continue with my textbooks. Working with textbooks can be boring, but it gives the best results.

Hvad siger min Gyldendal ordbog?

1. "Tosk" star ikke i mit ordbog dansk!

2. "Torsken" = de kabeljauw (NL)

Nordmændene har åbenbart valgt at lade forskellene i udtale afspejle sig i stavningen. Danskerne er lidt mere konservative med det.

Alert! I haven't forgotten this thread, nor have I given up. I won't have access to HTLAL for a couple of days, so my status report for January will have to wait till next week.
