I wanted to study German a little longer tonight, but couldn't handle anymore HP, so I read through the grammar explanations and learned the few vocabs words I didn't know clearly from FSI German units 1&2. Perhaps 50 min doing that.

I should note I've been doing the last 5 chapters or so with a 20% speed increase... this serves two functions... first it acclimatises me to following more rapid conversations, and second it makes the third time through the same book a little more tolerable... it may being having a minor negative impact on vocabulary acquisition (since unlearnt words fly by faster, but I feel it's worth it.

I've been using the PaceMaker plugin for winamp... it works quite well and allows you to adjust the tempo without altering the pitch... this was an idea from Volte originally, although I couldn't get the program she mentioned to work.

I've decided to start keeping count of flashcard additions (using supermemo and
similar programs) now since specifically with French I've been adding flashcards rather intensively since I finished Assimil May 20th..

As of June 3rd I have 114 + 200 + 7 + 18 = 339 German flashcards in four sets.

Well after 80 days of LRing I finally finished HP6 3rd pass, I had expected this to take less time, but unavoidable circumstances cropped up. Still over all I managed 77 hrs 26 + 22 hrs 21 min on this recent pass for 99 hrs 47 min total.

New material listed to stays of course the same since the last pass *(the variation lies in the part of Metamorphosis I did at the beginning of this experiment)
31 hrs 54 min (32 hrs 30 min)*

I'm now going to conduct some tests on my listening + reading comprehension... I did over half of book 1 with a parallel text, but for book 6 I only used English text. In the 3rd pass of HP6 I sometimes increased the speed 20% through the slower parts, perhaps for 4-5 chapters total.

When I go to a random page in the book (german copy of HP6, which I had previously not looked at), I know exactly whats happening and following it isn't a problem... from another stand point I took a random page of hp6 and have noted the words I didn't know or didn't become apparent from context (out of 338 words on the page-not unique words though):

Händchen*
Kerzengerade
Gerausche
Vorhangen
schützend*
Truhe
Schoss*
Wäschekorb
anschielen
Duft
Geruch
beträchtlich
gewidmet

*were immediately apparent once I looked them up... just not quite familiar enough to have been fully committed to my memory yet*

13/338

96% recognition of words based on context and having listen read the book three times...

I tried the same with page of a Brothers Grimm story... recognition dropped to 90% (again of words total, not unique ones)... this was enough to follow generally whats happening but not enough to really enjoy reading it as too many details are missing.

In any case, I'm relatively pleased with these results... I'd also like to make a comparisson with HP7 which I haven't listen-read, but I don't have a German copy at the moment.

I intend to drop my LRing in German to about 40 minutes a day (5 days a week), and not to read any story beyond the point where it stops holding my interest (thus probably the same story 3x is not likely)

I would like to start listen-reading in French, but I'm going to hit 1000 new flashcard words added since I finished Assimil first.

More comments likely to follow when I'm more awake.
