Shall we start a January challenge? How about self-introductions containing Korean? Team Lobo did something similar as a January challenge and I think it went quite well.

Quick translation:
Yeah, that's a good idea! Then, should I start?

My name is Mathias. It's already been 4 years since I started studying Korean. Despite that, there
hasn't been any long period during which I really studied seriously. I just practiced a lot. I
improved just by having standard (everyday style) conversations with my friends and watching dramas.
This year, I had planned to study seriously and pass the TOPIK 4 but in the end I found an internship
in China so the language I'll study a lot until August will be Chinese. Of course, I'll listen to
Korean and talk to my Korean friends everday but.. That's not what I call study.

Anyway, Good luck for this year TAC14!

Ah yes, that sounds like an excellent challenge. I'll write something up when I have time
- my Korean is still pretty bad :)

Just to clarify: The way it was done in the Team Lobo thread (which is what I suggest here) is
that each person can write as much or as little as they wish in Korean (though more is
obviously encouraged), but they must at least write *some* of it in Korean. If you feel
comfortable enough writing the whole thing in Korean, then go for it; if you feel that even
writing a couple sentences in Korean is challenging, then do that and finish the entry in
English. Since it is early in the year, it's important that the challenge is one that is still
accessible to beginners. By keeping the amount of Korean variable each person can decide
how much they need to write to effectively challenge themselves.

Rough translation:
Hello team members, my name is Shane. I live in the US and have studied Korean for 4
years and 4 months. This year, improving my grammar skills is my primary goal.
Furthermore, I also intend to practice writing and speaking more than last year.

Go Team Gumiho!

(That is a bit shorter than I originally intended to make my introduction, but I ran out of
things I wanted to say.)

Hello everyone. My name is Adam. I'm an American who originally came to Korea four years ago to teach English. These days I work at an elementary school in Jeollado. Um... I started taking private classes since March last year. In April last year I read Park Wan Suh's "Who Ate Up All The Shinga?" and I liked it so after reading it I started studying harder. The sequel wasn't translated into English so I want to read it (and other authors' books) in Korean... oh, and I really like going to noraebangs. haha

Good luck everyone!

Also, since I wasn't here for the Korean music talk, here's my input: my favorite bands are the ones I can sing in noraebang. Seriously. Noraebang is one of my favorite things about Korea - think karaoke with your friends. And alcohol. (Sometimes without alcohol.) (Usually with alcohol.) (And it's a good place to bring a date!)

If you intend on going to Korea, I recommend that you like singers with whom you share a similar voice type. I used to be more of a fan of girl groups, but then I tried singing Ga-In in a noraebang. If you're a baritone like me, it's just not going to sound right.

I'm a fan of Busker Busker (indie/pop), San E (rap - good live), Roy Kim (indieish/pop), SHINee (idol boy group), Leessang (hip-hop - VERY good live), and Yoon Do Hyun Band (rock). Akdong Musician (pop) and Bobby Kim (ballad) aren't bad. 2NE1 (idol girl group) is terrific, I like Ga-In (pop) a lot, and just to totally ignore everything I said in the previous paragraph, my all time favorite noraebang song is Miss A's "Good Girl, Bad Girl."

I think that's one reason I like CNBLUE out of the male vocal groups: 정용화 (the lead singer)
is usually in my vocal range (not in every song but in many of them). Even singing along to
someone like 조용필 can be tricky as he sings a higher pitch than I care to sing. In fact, I've
memorized his song 여행을 떠나요 (the only male vocal song I've memorized to date, though
I plan to change that this year) but singing it in the same pitch as him is tough (doable, but
my vocal cords don't like me so much afterward). Strangely enough, many girl groups are
easier to sing along with since I can often just shift down a full octave and be comfortably in
my vocal range. In fact one of my favorite songs to sing is Secret's "사랑은 Move" which
gives me no real vocal range issues at all.

I'm Renate. It's been nearly 4 years now since I started studying Korean. At first I attended language classes at university, but now there are no classes which fit my level of Korean proficiency. So I started to learn Korean through self-study 2 1/2 years ago. Luckily at that time I discovered this forum, so I was able to do well even though I studied on my own.

Because there are so many other things I have to do, I decided not to focus on studying Korean this year. After I take the oral examinations for my graduation in April, I will have to think about my future. I'm not yet sure what I want to do and what I can do. So I want to do several internships after my graduation. Because I like to teach, becoming a teacher now could be a good idea. To reach that goal, I might attend university some more. If I want to do that, I will have to earn some money for it as well.

I've also become interested in another language apart from Korean. I started learning Persian in 2011, but then decided to focus some more on my Korean study. But now, as I'm dating a guy from Iran, I plan to study Persian again.

I have too many plans, don't I... But still it would be great if I could improve my level of Korean a bit this year as well. For this goal I'm going to read several books and listen to podcasts.
