Among the newer books, Kalaam Gamiil is an excellent introduction to the Egyptian (Cairene dialect). It wasn't published when I was a student, but it's among the books I've closely examined to see if I recommend it for others (something I do for resources for Arabic and Persian). The CD offers clear audio, and each section offers a good amount of vocabulary, grammar notes, and drills. Most of the Arabic in the book is in the Arabic script (great for those with experience in MSA), but there are some areas (such as the pronunciation guides) that offer transliteration. The book looks at Egyptian in comparison to MSA, which is nice because it not only highlights the differences but the similarities that are sometimes taken for granted when making the transition from MSA to Egyptian. The second volume of this series is coming up, and I hope to take a look at it as well. Spoken Arabic of Cairo is one of the main resources I used when I was studying the dialect. It offers clear explanations of Egyptian grammar and really gets you to start thinking in the language. Although it is an older work, it is still useful. The only downside is that there's no audio. However, this can be taken care of by having another resource that does provide audio in the dialect. The Kallimni Arabi series is excellent - clear audio, and thorough explanations. The downside is that the courses - even the instructions and explanations are almost exclusively in Arabic, so is probably difficult for those not quite comfortable with reading Arabic yet. It is definitely useful if you have an instructor or friend that is proficient in Arabic, though. Kullu Tamam! is a nice course, but it relies almost exclusively on transliteration, which may be an irritating feature for those interested in sticking to the Arabic script. A Reference Grammar of Egyptian Arabic is yet another decent course/reference, though it also relies on transliteration. The University of Michigan has some publications (free ones) as well. The audio materials are available for some of the dialects. Once you grasp the basics of the dialect, I recommend taking a look at the 'Arabi Liblib series in order to get in touch with the finer details of the colloquial language. I thought about Team Alef, too. It's shared in all 3 languages. It would be my second choice after HAP. Basically I think the shorter the better. There's a lot I need to fit in my log title.

I don't like it but if we want to abide by the rules then we must eliminate JohannaNYC from the leader's seat by tomorrow, since she has been part of no TAC previously, however, there are more than zero members of the team who have been part of TAC. I'd prefer a leader who is not me, considering I'm incapable of maintaining order and am hugely unreliable. As for the team name, I like Alef. Well, I've taken part in TAC before, but I'm already managing the Asian team. Who else is eligible? I think JohannaNYC is doing a great job and she's been on the forum for a while, so maybe we can make an exception?
