I got the Hans Wehr dictionary today!!! Super excited. (I know, I know, getting excited
over a dictionary.) But enough people consider it the best Arabic-English dictionary around. The ability to use it requires an adequate understanding of the Arabic verb system so I consider it a good sign that I'm able to use it. For those who don't already know, the words aren't organized according to how they're spelled. Rather, they're organized according to the word's roots. For example, if you're looking for the word "اكتشاف" ('iktishaaf/discovery), you won't be able to find it under alif. The only way to find it is by recognizing that it is a Form VIII sound verbal noun with the root K/Sh/F. Thus, you'll be looking for it under "كشف" (kashafa/to reveal). Definitely almost impossible to use without understanding the verb system. Okie, I'm just gonna go flick through the dictionary now. On another note, has anyone ever used Berlitz Chinese? Does it really make you say 妈妈 骑马，马慢，妈妈吗马？ On yet another note, I discovered yet another word that Swahili borrowed from Arabic... malaika = ملاك = angel. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm not taking part in TAC this year. (Actually, I'm a little surprised there's no Arabic
team. Way to represent.) But that doesn't mean I can't update my log. I finally found a use for Rosetta Stone Arabic (besides paperweight). I use it only for vocabulary and pronunciation. I fly through the modules now because I skip everything else. And it doesn't even matter cos I've got most of the conjugations and grammar down. I haven't finished Harry Potter in Spanish but I'm switching to Percy Jackson for now. I just got my hands on the first series in Spanish. I didn't even know they had the series in Spanish. Let's hope Percy's as funny in Spanish as he is in English. Will be interesting to see Greek mythology rendered in Spanish. 1 person has voted this message useful |
