Alright peeps, strikingstar's back in business.
Apologies for the late start but between the holiday season and all the traveling I've been doing the past few weeks, I never seemed to have any time to sit down and study. I've just returned to Kenya (last night) so I'm looking forward to getting back into action now that things will be settling down. My main gripe with Arabic has been the ease with which I forget the grammar rules (of which there are like a billion and one). Hence, my little side project this year will be to summarize the rules in a nice format for easy referencing when the need arises. On travels, not too shabby on Arabic-speaking countries. Egypt last month and UAE (mostly Dubai) this month already. I was pleased that most people could understand my really (and I mean really) basic MSA sentences. But I got my work cut out for me. Also, have a sneaking suspicion I have a really horrible accent when speaking MSA. I make my voice all guttural and hoarse and it sounds really weird. @Elan. Shukran. Once things settle down, I'd love to read about your travels (especially the trip to
Egypt!!). Your voice probably sounds fine, maybe you're not used to hearing yourself speak as much Arabic as you did on this trip. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I get the feeling Arabic always sounds hoarse and guttural.
Do you know any good online Arabic-English dictionaries? I could use one, preferably with pronunciation. I want to know how to pronounce a word I just learned.... 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Regrettably, I don't know any good online Arabic-English dictionaries but the best (IMO) and the only Arabic-English dictionary that I use is the Hans-Wehr. The best part (some say the worst) about the Hans-Wehr is that it really forces you to understand the Arabic root system to be able to use it effectively. Say if you were looking for اكتتب/iktataba (He subscribed), you would never find it under "I". You must know that it is Form VIII of kataba. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
