Chinese is kind of daunting at first, but it's certainly a good investment in the long run. The characters do take a long time to learn, but the writing system has stayed almost constant throughout time and people speaking different dialects share the same writing system, with only a few exceptions. The most impressing thing about Chinese is probably its ancient literary works (proses, poems, etc.) use exactly the same language as modern versions do, only the diction is quite different (pretty much like Shakespeare versus modern English.) So literally when you've fully mastered modern Chinese, the door to more fascinating Chinese culture and history is open for you. It's not like English versus its old version. One definitely won't be able to understand Beowulf in its original version even if he/she has fully mastered modern English.
By the way, I'm a Mandarin speaker. 有问题或想法欢迎交流:)

Hi, it's mandarin. But the characters are traditional Chinese characters.
Nowadays in China mainland we use simplified characters, it's much easier!
