Well, I'm in with Italian.
As I feel pretty neutral about this language, though it is on my language hit list but nowhere in the priority section, I think it is a good choice for the experiment because chances that I'll do too much (= more than required by Assimil instructions) aren't high.
And there are enough people in Luxembourg with Italian roots. I regularly hear it spoken (not as much as I hear Luxembourgish/French/English/Portuguese, but still often enough) so chances are high that I can practise Italian with a native speaker after we're through with the experiment. I mean the Embassy of Italy is vis-à-vis my workplace...
Though following this argument I'd also need to learn Danish and Greek (the Danish one is round the corner and the Greek one a little further down the street), but I think I'll stay with Italian. :-)

I don't like translating unless it's for the benefit of others, what could be the alternatives to translating for the active wave?

I think I'll join this challenge as well. While French is the language for my Super Challenge, and I'm currently using Assimil French, my copy of the new Assimil Russian remains unused. This is the perfect excuse to get started with it.

Not only, I think the agreement was about max 100 hours or low A2 level. My personal criterion is that I miserably failed the placement test at Dialang, where you have to tell real words from made up ones. My Norwegian score was zero although I can sometimes understand it... And I haven't yet had any extensive input, apart from music.
I'll also be doing a few others "informally", especially Polish and Romanian :) I'm intermediate in these and I won't be doing it the standard way.

Is it still open for anyone to join? I might be done with using French textbooks by that time, and I'd be glad to start an Assimil for a random language.

I think so, it's not even close to starting yet anyways :)
I'm pretty sure registrations begin in october.
