Blauwe Mandaagen: done! Booyah. My Super Challenge statistics now are:
Films: 80/100
Books: 7
"Books": 18.6/100
So yeah, nothing that would curl your hair, but at least the film part will definitely
get done.
Side note - as I have mentioned before, I have been keeping a detailed record of how
long I read every day since the beginning of summer. I have read four books during that
time (Tirza, Kartonnen Dozen, Mijn haar is lang, and now Blauwe
Maandagen). The record looks like this:
So now, as a fun side note - depending on how you define fun - we can plug these
numbers into Excel and see if any fun statistics pop out:
Average time per page: 1.9 min/page
Average number of minutes read per day: 71.5 min
Average number of pages read per day: 37.9 pages
Average time per page: 3.5 min/page
Average number of minutes read per day: 45.0 min
Average number of pages read per day: 12.8 pages
Average time per page: 1.8 min/page
Average number of minutes read per day: 31.3 min
Average number of pages read per day: 17.8 pages
Average time per page: 1.8 min/page
Average number of minutes read per day: 48.3 min
Average number of pages read per day: 26.3 pages
This yields some interesting (to me) facts.
1) Although I initially hypothesized that my reading speed would accelerate as the
summer wore on, it turns out that my reading speed is actually much more dependent on
the level of the book. For example, according to the spreadsheet, I average a regular
1.8 minutes per page while reading... except for with Kartonnen Dozen, which has
the highest level of diction. That one takes me almost twice as long to read.
2) If a book is above my level, I will get "fed up" with it much faster (i.e., I will
read fewer pages every day before getting a headache and calling it quits). Note that I
read three times as far in Tirza every day as I would read in Kartonnen
Dozen.
3) Apparently I averaged the least amount of time per day with the Brusselmans. This
kind of makes sense because nothing happens in his books and they are intentionally a
bit boring.
4) No matter how long or how challenging the book, I spent around the same number of
reading days on each one. That's kind of weird.
Okay, so anyway, riveting stuff. Options abound for the next book. Will update when I
pick a good 'un.

Lapsed sinners are the best. They're reliable sinners. Love 'em. Love sinners in general.

I've taken a bit of a break from Dutch over the last few days. Instead of Dutch
literature, I have read the entirety of Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves,
which is, by the way, a really fantastic book. I highly recommend it.
Indonesian
Still a pause on Indonesian for now, but in about 8 or 9 months I might be able to
explain why.

I'm on page 15 of archibald strohalm.
Namelijk: naar New York
verhuizen!!
nooit in zo'n grote stad gewoond.
Hoera!

See above.

grootste Nederlandstalige schrijvers ooit is.
New York is een
mooie stad, maakt me ook soms duizelig. Nieuw baantje, nieuw huis, nieuwe wijk... goh.

Sooo archibald strohalm is moving at a glacial pace now. I'm now on page 51.
Still, I have noticed some fun Dutch-related things in New York. For example, there's this bodega on the corner
of the street where I work that I visited the other day. I was flabbergasted to see that the door handles were
labeled "Pull" in five languages - and Dutch was second! (After English and before French.) I have never seen that
before in the United States.
For a minute I thought that it might be some kind of nod to the fact that New York used to be New Amsterdam,
but then I realized the name of the restaurant was in French and that they served "Brussels Breakfast" tea. So it
looks like it's because the chain is actually Belgian. But still, pretty cool.
Indonesian
I'm still noting it in these entries to keep myself accountable, but I haven't done anything in a while.
