Seems a lot of people are putting together different L-R materials with different focuses. Any chance of collaborating or doing something similar to FarkasTranslations, which has better parallel text alignment and more language options? I think the advantages of the two together could make for a really powerful learning tool.

I tried to register,

First I had to give javascript execution permission to quite a few *external* domains, and then all I got is an email saying

"Thank you for signing up for chicory! You will receive a notification when the beta test launches."

if I try to re-register the page says "YOUR LIVE STATS: 1 clicks, 0 signups"

and I remember reading something about twitter and updates too.

Whatever happened to simple email registration, self-contained domains? If all of the above are real requirements, I'm out.

I'll be glad to hear I just missed something, though.

mrwarper,

I'm not sure what happened, but it sounds like you tried to sign up for the launch list.
Please go to the full website at getchicory.com where
you can click "Sign Up" to enter your email and choose a password.

Apparently "beta.chickory.com" didn't redirect me when I tried before. All up and running, I will check it out later. Thanks.

The interface has been updated and works properly with iOS. iPad/iPhone users no longer
need the workaround. Enjoy!

Check for more updates @getchicory

A lot of people seem to make parallel texts for their own use, but not a lot of people have significant public collections. From what I can see, my collection
(farkastranslations.com) is the largest by far. I collected/aligned most of the texts, but some of them are from other sources (mostly received from people on here).

I read most of this thread, but I couldn't find out much about the project.
Will this be a free service or will it be paid? What texts will you be using? Public domain texts only? How about licensing? Do you allow others to
download/reuse/redistribute aligned texts and/or audio? Who is aligning the texts and with what method? Who is making the audio? Are they getting paid for it?

Comments like "if there is no available translation we'll just translate the texts" make me a little concerned about the future of the project. You probably don't have a
realistic idea of how much work is involved in creating a passable translation of a long literary text. I'm a translator by profession, and I can tell you it's a huge
job. Translating a novel such as The Master and Margarita takes a competent rofessional at least two months of full-time work, and a competent professional will charge
about $3000-$6000 for the job depending on the language.
Not a lot of people are willing do a job on this scale for free, and even fewer people can do it in acceptable quality.
To a lesser extent, the same applies to creating audio and even to aligning books. Misjudging the amount of work required for building up a sizeable collection is what
usually trips up projects like this.

Anyway, let me know if you are interested in sharing/swapping aligned texts.

Oh, and one more comment. If you are trying to build up a large collection, consider doing multilingual alignments. I.e. get the same book in as many languages as you can
and do a big parallel alignment like so.

Then you can extract any language pair from the table (15 language pairs in case of this six-language alignment). This is obviously much more efficient than doing 15
alignments separately.

It looks like "Chicory" is out of the beta stage (though now it only has one book, 阿Q). It is also no longer free.
