Which course do you think is better, '51 or '71?

The '71 version isn't available in English, whereas the '51 / '58 version is available in English, which might impact your decision. They're quite similar, but I prefer the 71 version a bit (partly because one of the male voices in the '51 version is high and, to me, a bit annoying). They're both great courses, and neither suffers from what newer Assimil courses do (tons of wasted space for "fill in the blank" exercises and other such junk).
Many of the earlier lessons are very similar, with only a word here and there changed. The later lessons are quite different, though. Personally I've got both, and tend to go back and forth between them. Ultimately, either is very good, so pick based on what languages you know and what you can get a copy of. The 1951 / 58 English-based books are rather expensive, starting at around $50, whereas I've seen copies of Le russe sans peine (1971 version) running for 10 euros and shipping.

There's a new & better version of 1951 book's scan at uztranslations.
It's enlarged, sharpened and the background is properly removed now. Enjoy!
