platynota and everyone:
I've solved the problem with the DLI Persian Farsi zip file. It was zipped on a Mac using Mac software. Sometimes stuff that is compressed by a Mac program doesn't work well, or at least the same, on a Windows box.
So I went and found a free copy of Stuffit Expander 2010 and voila! it uncompressed the file perfectly, including all the subdirectories. If you want the contents of the file (which look very interesting), I suggest you do the same.
And special thanks to platynota for providing extra information regarding DLI farsi
files. I also suggest that people look at http://fieldsupport.dliflc.edu/products/headstart/index.html , which platynota mentioned, because it has new Farsi and Dari headstart files - which are all interactive programs. It looks very interesting.

Great job John! Would you mind to tell me if anything other than Vol 2-8 and Advanced Army recordings are included in the pack? I believe something about medical terminology was supposed to be. Is vol 9 and 10 or anything else useful present?
Concerning the headstart files, I don't believe one can access them unless s/he has a military or government email (tell me if you've discovered something I else!!). I wrote them about receiving it, even so, but I was sent just a generic email. I'll probably do it again.

platynota:
In addition to the DLI Persian Farsi Basic Course books, modules 2 - 8, and the Army phrases, the packet also contains:
DLI Navy Phrases with pdf and mp3 audio files
Farsi for You - which consists of about 15 files produced in Iran.
A medical pdf from the DLI field support modules that you suggested.
16 lessons of Pimsleur Farsi, and -
Several Farsi books, including those from FSI, the Peace Corps and Living Language.
With regard to your second question, it appears that the DLI materials at http://fieldsupport.dliflc.edu/products/headstart/index.html have been designated as for official use only, and accessible only from a .mil or .gov computer. Oh well.

Hi John,
Glad to hear someone has had some luck with those. I've tried every conceivable program on a Windows and a Mac
and still cannot unpack the DLI Persian audio files, nor the DLI Russian files from the same post earlier in this
thread. Any chance you'd be willing to download, unpack, rezip and post again on a file sharing site? I realize this
is asking quite a lot, though I'd really like to get hold of both the Persian and the Russian audio. If you have any
other suggestions please let me know.
Thanks!

Amarch, are the Russian files you can't open from these links?
http://rapidshare.com/files/273139491/DLIRussian.zip.001
http://rapidshare.com/files/273182647/DLIRussian.zip.002
http://rapidshare.com/files/273207797/DLIRussian.zip.003
http://rapidshare.com/files/273220754/DLIRussian.zip.004
I downloaded those not too long ago (by which I mean in the past month or two,) and all I did was select all four parts and use 7zip to extract them to one folder. (This was on a PC)
I've seen many people say you need some program (hjspilt?? I think) to open multi part files, but I've never had a problem just selecting all parts and extracting to one file/folder using 7zip, unless the file was corrupted or had a password.
I know nothing about Winrar, but in 7zip you can 'test the archive' to find out whether a .rar is corrupt or not. If you have that capability to check the individual parts on whatever unrar program you're using, maybe you could check to see if one of the parts is corrupt (maybe it didn't download properly/completely?) and try downloading that part again? I know you've said you've tried 'every conceivable program' already, but just on the off chance that it's just one part that's the problem, I thought I'd suggest it.
I don't know if that applies to whatever difficulty you're having with the Russian files, but hopefully it helps.

hi pookiebear79, I've downloaded the Russian course and successfully extract them. I'd like to share my experience with you guys who may find it help.when using hjspilt, no need to "select all four parts " , just select the first one(which actually means "DLIRussian.zip.001"), one is enough, then you'll get the full RAR file. if still any problems, let me know.

Thank you all so much for your help. Your advice was right on. Rather than waiting until I'd downloaded the entire
set, I was attempting to unpack the downloads piecemeal. After downloading all fours parts of the Russian DLI, I
simply selected the first part, as chuigang suggested, and the entire set unzipped. For those using a mac, this
works seamlessly with 'The Unarchiver'.
