Am currently reading through Astérix et Obélix in French. I'm not finding any of the stories at all difficult but am learning the odd word or two. I've never read the very first one, Astérix le Gaulois, and so I ordered it from France a few days ago. Fingers crossed it should be on my doorstep today when I come home from uni. For me, French is just about having fun for the moment. In Russian I am reading записки охотника - Sketches from a Hunter's Album, by Turgenev.

In the cheap book sale of our mediothek I bought an astronomy book which was published in the German translation in 2000.
The English title is: "The whole Shebang A state-of-the-Universe(s) report" The German title is: "Chaos und Notwendigkeit Report zur Lage des Universums" This book deals with all important cosmological theories which were already developed in 1997 / 2000. Just finished Mia Couto's A varanda do frangipani. Wow, what a great author! I thoroughly enjoyed reading my first complete book in Portuguese, and I look forward to reading many more!
Now, I am reading a short book in Spanish, Asesinato en el laboratorio de idiomas by Alma Pérez, before returning to Mia Couto in Portuguese. I thought that it would help me to keep the languages separate in my mind by alternating reading in Portuguese with reading in Spanish. The title was quite apropos for those of us who are interested in languages and like to read fiction- Murder in the Language Lab. Asesinato en el laboratorio de idiomas is available free from the publisher along with many other short stories and novelas in Spanish, Catalan, and English. You can download the books freely from the publisher in epub or lit format. I then convert them with Calibre to mobi for my kindle et voilà- free ebooks! Badosa.com ebooks. Edit: I have finished the short story/novela, a bit of fluff but it helps me to read in Spanish to keep the languages separate. I am now reading Terra sonâmbula by Mia Couto in Portuguese. The book is a reflection on the civil war in Mozambique. I have just learned a really cool word in Mozambican Portuguese- "naparama" which is akin to a Mozambican ninja! I'm currently reading おくりびと (okuribito) in Japanese. The amount of unknown vocabulary related to funeral ceremonies is staggering, but it's really interesting and is excellent for my study. I'm learning a lot about traditions in Japanese culture related to the touchy subject of death and funerals. Sounds like a depressing topic but it's quite interesting! :-)

L'étranger, Albert Camus. A great book for those who, as myself, can understand French and his structures quite well, but don't have a vast vocabulary yet.

I just finished a fantastic German mystery novel called "Erst eins, dann zwei" by Erika Kroell. It was a real page-turner – I couldn't put it down, and ending up finishing it in four days (which, I just calculated, is 73 pages a day – that's got to be a personal record!).
