I have begun reading Paul Auster’s novel The New York Trilogy in Spanish (La Trilogia de Nueva York) and for the first time I have experienced that I can read a good book in Spanish almost fluently and really enjoy reading it.

Well, I don’t believe in miracles (my Spanish isn’t quite at an intermediate level yet, I think) so I googled for Paul Auster and found out that using very simple language but not writing simple stories is something he is known for. The translator has obviously been well aware of that it is essential to keep the language simple.

In German, I'm reading Katz und Maus by Günter Grass. In Spanish, I'm reading an intermediate level reader that has a lot of fun folk tales and stuff. And in my native English, I'm reading Ulysses by James Joyce.

Unfortunately my language skills are not up to the point where I could call it reading but I am trying to read Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens (German) and the Japanese version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. While I have to look up just about every other word I find it the most fun way to add to my vocabulary and have it stick.

At the moment: "Painted veil" (an antique Polish translation, which I'm not that fond of) and Stephen King's new short stories collection in English. As usual, just couldn't wait for the Polish translation to appear on the market and went ahead and bought the original :)
