Historically it was the same word, which meant 'to suffer, experience'. So the
expression "jeg kan godt lide det" would mean something like "I can quite tolerate
this" and "kan ikke lide det" - "I can't tolerate this". In the course of time it gave
"I like" and "I don't like" respectively.

When it's "to like", it's mostly "li'".

When it's "to suffer", it's always the whole word, "lide".

In Danish, I would like to say goodbye to my friends. I am moving away from them and I want to say the type of goodbye that implies "So long until the next time we get together! We will meet again!" I don't want to say goodbye as in "This is it! And we may never see each other again!"

Which would be the best choice:

Farvel
Farvel så længe
På gensyn

Or some other word/phrase?
