For those who are more interested in input, not output, the iPad can be ideal since you cannot be so easily
distracted by multitasking such as checking your email, &c.

I respect his opinion, hehe, it's just the problem that it isn't factually true as far as I know. Checking email is one of the few tasks that you can easily multi-task, it happens in the background. I assume you can put the device in Airplane mode (as I am so aggravated to have to do with my iPhone to make sure no one calls/texts/emails me in the middle of a Pimsleur lesson or shadowing session!), but then you lose access to any online content, video, streaming radio in target language, etc. and dictionaries not storing their data locally.

The iPad can do most of what I use my computer for but it can be continuously used for
over 10 hours without being recharged and weights much less than my laptop. Since I can
carry thousands of PDFs with me and annotate them as much as I want I do not need to
bring a lot of physical books everywhere I go anymore. Listening to content while reading
is also very easy on the device and many high end dictionaries are available on it.

And if you use iPod headphones or a compatible set, you can play and pause audio tracks while reading the
textbook PDF in another app.

At the moment, I'm trying to decide if Bento would
make a good vocabulary database app or not.

It seems that everyone here who has an iPad and uses it for their language studies is
pretty happy with it.... right?

Yes, but I recommend the 3G version in particular so you can check online dictionaries, Wikipedia, and this forum
wherever you are at any moment. :)

How about Japanese input? I know you can easily switch between languages, but can you
easily switch between keyboards?
