A big hearty "Большое спасибо" to everyone for all the kind wishes here. You're all so brilliant! I'm feeling much better, thanks, although it looks like I might have permanent tinnitus from now on (who would have thought simply swimming in the sea could have led to such an awful thing).
All the same, even though I won't be heading off to Russia next week on doctor's orders, stuck with a great big backlog of work to dig into and on meds to try and quieten the little Shiva singing soprano in my ear, I refuse to let this all get me down. In fact, I'm resolved to hit back even stronger after this setback and make some real waves in this little project rather than the splashing about I did in the first week. I hope I'm up to the challenge and don't disappoint you all. For when the going gets tough, the tough gets listening and reading Russian! ;) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I'm sad to read about the cancellation of your trip but glad you could use it as an incentive for learning more Russian! I've read a bunch about reading listening but haven't come across the extensive/intensive differentiation you made earlier. I feel that I would love to spend that much time with Master and Margaret and would be interested to know what exactly you are doing with the the three different versions of it (Eng written, Russ written, Russ audio) and how it is working out for you. Spasibo! Yeah, it's sad that I won't be able to fly over to Russia this week, but on the brighter side of things, I'll hopefully be much better prepared to speak Russian and chat about "kolduni" next time round. ;) The "Craig in Moldova" website is great fun, by the way, clang. I haven't had time to read through all the posts yet, but the snippets of Russian conversation, especially the transcript with your host's babushka about computers and the cute video of Amelia, did make me laugh. That's exactly what it's like! :D As regards reading Master and Margarita, I absolutely love this book. It's probably one of the very few novels in the world I could read over and over again. It just pushes all the right buttons for me, I guess. I'm currently using the parallel text from MarcoDiAngelo's superb website, and was lucky enough to already have the audiobook from my last trip to St Petersburg. The free audio link on MarcoDiAngelo's website is decent enough quality but unfortunately a radiospektakl', so this means it's heavily abridged/edited and doesn't really align with the given text. Don't worry though, it should be possible to find matching audio for free elsewhere on the Internet, if you have a good look around (Russian is the easiest to get hold of, in general). The main thing to check is whether the initial lines of the first paragraph match with the corresponding audio, and also that the overall running time is closer to 16 hours. I'll go into more details about my methodology, including the intensive and extensive parts, later on in this log. By then I'll hopefully have a better feel for how it's all working out, and will have got back into the game after the last couple of weeks of illness. I think it worked really well with Spanish back in May, and I've fine-tuned it a lot since then on the basis of what I learnt throughout the study process and other interesting theories. Now I'd like to see how it fares with a level 3 difficulty language like Russian over the next 10 days or so, and am keeping my fingers crossed for a similar success story. I'm currently finding it almost impossible to focus on anything at all due to severe continuous ringing in my ears since the ear infection hit a few weeks ago. German ENT specialists tell me this is most likely a permanent and incurable condition, but I remain ever hopeful that it will improve over time.
It's difficult to describe to anyone who doesn't suffer with tinnitus 24 hours a day, but if I could summon up a picture, at best, it's a little like trying to do your homework on a busy runway with jet-engines taxiing nearby. When it gets worse, often due to stress or tiredness, it's more like nails shrilly clawing down a blackboard, inharmoniously and incessantly drilling inside my head (even during sleep). I really want to get back to studying languages as soon as possible, of course, but will need to take some more time out to learn how to deal with this new challenge and find a way to get some sleep once again. As many have already suggested, sometimes life's hurdles can help open up your consciousness to new opportunities and hidden strengths. And hopefully, my visit to Ireland next week will provide some fresh perspective on all this too. So sorry for these postponements, everyone, and thanks once again for all the good wishes and support. I'm determined to try to find a way to beat this thing and will be back soon. Just a brief note to everyone following my Russian log that I'll be back on it later this year! After some shore leave, my first ports of call will be to relocate to UK and learn a bit of Swedish, and then get the rest of my other languages (i.e. German and Spanish) back up to scratch. Once this is done, however, I aim to return to this log and finish what I started in Russian, with a view to going full-immersion for a while at home too. Current level: A2 (elementary) Opening reading score: 78% (-4%, "Ночной дозор", Пролог, 100 words) Primary goal: C1 level in reading (approx. 95%) Extended goal: C2 level in reading (approx. 98%) Method: Study-and-click programme Previous study-and-click: 20 hours (21-27 July, 2010) Passive words clicked so far: 1155 Selected text/audio: Mikhail Bulgakov, "Мастер и Маргарита" (Master and Margarita) I'm finally back and readying my resources to declare war on Russian vocabulary! Yes...I'd like to get back into the ring after all the unforeseen setbacks and consequent long hiatus, and take my study-and-click methodology to the next level. My goal will be to reach 95-98% reading scores by the end of the month. It won't be easy, by any stretch of the imagination, especially as I'll also be using this time to move into and furnish my new home in England, in addition to all the usual preparations for Christmas and New Year. I've also somehow got myself into a really bad sleeping pattern lately and will need to break out of this too, if I want to succeed. You'll be able to follow my daily updates here again starting tomorrow, which will continue from where I left off 4 months ago (on 27th July). I'll try to keep these short and sweet, and the plan is just to move straight onto "Master i Margarita" and leave the Princeton Russian material behind. But first...I need to go down to my local Apple store to see if I can get my laptop repaired (again).
