If they were to charge something like USD40 for all levels, and if it didn't have installation restrictions, I'd recommend it as an excellent supplement to a student's main textbook. For fifteen times that amount, it is unconscionable.

What I find most sad about Rosetta Stone is that due to all of the commercials and other advertising, people who aren't really into the language learning "scene" think the courses are practically magical in nature, and always talk highly of them.

They've started a big push with Rosetta Stone in Japan. There's a bookstore downtown with a Rosetta Stone kiosk

If it included
A learned vocabulary of 5,000 words A grammar guide/course Translations A small dictionary A course on slang/idioms/daily speech I would be all over this. There are plenty of great language programs, Rosetta Stone just doesn't happen to be one of them. (And as an aside, I actually dislike courses that try to be everything to everyone; I would much rather buy individual grammar books and dictionaries than getting a bunch of low quality books in one big package.) 1 person has voted this message useful |
