You're so lucky to be in Russia to learn Russian. Do you go to a new country every year to teach? That must be a cool job. :)

I'm excited to watch your progress over the year. You have a huge advantage over a lot of us, having easy access to natives. Good luck!

Wow, great story Toffeeliz! (btw, did you know that "To feliz" means "I'm happy" in Portuguese? =P).

We`re on the same team, so I hope we'll be in touch throughout this year. Good luck with it!

@ zecchino1991 - Hey! I hope you do manage to come to Russia, it's quite an experience. I agree that it's different to learning a language back home; the exposure you get day-to-day, by being surrounded by advertisements and notices in Russian reallly do make a difference. I hope I make fast progress - I'll write some Russian soon enough I hope. :D Happy New Year!

@ tarvos - Happy new year to you, too.

@ Cristina - I highly doubt I'll be fluent but I really want to make the most of my time here! I'll keep my eyes out for cultural notes to put here.

@ Emme - I hope I can do as you said. I'll try my best!

@ riff - maybe St. Petersburg indeed, however the daylight hours are wuite short during winter there. Not to mention the cold weather! Moscow is toasty in comparison.

@ ancpem1 - hey! It is pretty cool. You should come to Russia if you ever get the chance, it's an experience.

@ Expugnator - each little bit I learn becomes instantly useful. I turned the TV on today and the first thing I heard was a phrase I had learnt the evening before! And I didn't know that about my nickname - I am happy :D

@ Kerrie - I'm not that much of a globetrotter. We'll see how long we stay in Russia, but this is my second time living abroad. It's definetly interesting. I do feel as if I have an advantage but it's also very easy to be lazy and not learn the language; all of our socialising is in English, bar speaking to our neighbours and shopkeepers.

@ fabriciocarraro - not until reading both of your posts. I'm glad it means something cheerful and not bad haha.

Study log:
30/12/12 - Unit 2 Русский Язык
            Unit 1 Teach Yourself Russian

Unit two dealt with 'У меня есть... У тебя есть...'. I read through TY afterwards. It was a great help with remembering the pronouns although I'm still a little shaky with those. I might write them down in my notebook to read on the metro.

1/12/12 - Unit 3 Русский Язык
2 exercises from Русский Язык в упражнениях

Unit three taught me how to ask for something (дайте мне...) and how to ask someone to lend me something (дай мне... ). There were some new verbs taught and this book began to cover the 1st verb conjugation. Thankfully I've already learnt about 1st/2nd verb forms in Русский Язык в упражнениях, which is more or less what the exercises I did today were about. My only issue with Русский Язык в упражнениях is that it presents words without giving a definition but doesn't have a dictionary section at the back. I really need to download a Rus/Eng dictionary either to my notebook or mobile.

2/12/12 - Unit 4 Русский Язык

I've read through the text and there's quite a bit of new vocabulary there. I'm going to put it into my pocketbook to review as I wait in queues etc.

Studied this afternoon when I'd just got back from a walk around китай город. The name is misleading; we believed this to be the place to get a decent Chinese meal...but there weren't any Chinese restaurants there. We did see lots of gold domed churches and cathedrals. There were quite a few tourists there too. It's wet and slushy out though and we ended up going to a Ёлки-Палки restautant (near the Bolshoi Theatre). They serve Russian meals at Pizza Hut prices. I amde the mistake of ordering ghoulash and the Russian pot roast. Mistake you ask? They tasted pretty much the same and the portions were both main course size. I should know better but my eyes are bigger than my belly.

I really hope I can give you guys some interesting stories about Moscow and Russia, but I apologise for any inaccuracies. My knowledge is quite limited, being here for only a short while. The most interesting story I have heard is of the spirit that lives in the hallway.

Russians will never shake hands over a doorway, or exchange gifts. They say there is a spirit that lives in the hallway and they don't want to make it jealous or angry. Before they leave for a long trip, they will sit by the door for a few minutes to reassure their house-spirit that they aren't going anywhere particularly nice or special. Some will even talk to the spirit. Should the spirit follow you, it is said to bring bad luck.

Apparently most Russians don't like to admit to the spirit of the hallway, but I find it quite comforting. No one wants to think of their house as being empty; having a spirit there to be waiting for you is quite nice. I accidently tried to shake someone's hand over an open doorway. They pulled me back into the building to shake, then we could leave. After being told, I'm slightly embarrased haha. But it led to me being told this neat little tid-bit.

Здравствуйте и С новым годом!
I've been a ESL/EFL teacher for some time too, and I've been offered to go to Moscow/St.Pete to teach English and/or Spanish, so I'll be watching for any comments you make on that besides your advances with Russian.
I've been told I should apply for a job in May to start in September, so I guess we'll have plenty of time to discuss a bit of everything.
Looking forward to it, good luck with your goals!

Hey Wort, it's nice to see you! good luck with 2013!

@mrwarper - Russian students love grammar and are very motivated, from what I've experienced thus far. It's a great place to teach.

January Goals

Do another 3 units in my main textbook.

Learn colours and numbers by heart.

Aim for at least 30 miniutes of Russian study or practice every day. I have a small notebook for vocabulary which I use to digest new words as I travel.

The goals aren't that ambitious, but should they prove easy then I will set a new, higher goal straight away. Good luck everyone with your own goals!
