No evil lasts forever. I've finished Il nuovo russo senza sforzo. The main drawback of this book is the length of the lessons and exercises, right through its half. This seem to be an Assimil problem, more noticeable at some courses than at others (Norwegian and Russian when compared to 90's German).
Now I'm going for the old, dusty (even in its virtual edition?) 1951's Russian without toil. I know it will get more literary by its end, but still that's what makes it more of a review for Il nuovo russo senza sforzo than the new Le Russe, which is very dry. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Today I started Russian Without Toil. I fell a new uplift. I did the first 7 lessons in a row, because they are all easy, both in listening and in reading.
One doubt: скоро comes to mean 'fast' (I'm used to seeing быстро). There's also a sentence: а ваш папа, скоро будет дома? Translated as "but your papa, when will he be at home?" To me it sounds more like "Will he be home soon?". So, is it wrong, is it right? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Well if you think about it, there's not much of a difference in meaning between 'soon' and 'fast'. At least in

Yeah, I'm really impressed that you finished that version of Assimil Russian. I've tried to work through it (in French) four different times and I still can't get past lesson 50.
In fact I noticed that we have had similar struggles with Russian--trying many different things and becoming discouraged by the overwhelming vocabulary. This time I'm doing word lists with vocabulary from the Penguin course, hoping that when I've learned all the words I won't feel overwhelmed. I can't verify that it works yet, though. Obrigado =D I must stress I didn't overlearn it, it was more like just one half
passive/half active wave. I might have retained 15% actively to 40% passively of the book. Still,it was a good introduction to take away my bad feelings and fears about Russian. I did try Penguin in the past and although it teaches grammar nicely, I felt overwhelmed with vocabulary all the same. Now it isn't even in my plans. Well, Russian is a language at which everyone gets flooded with resources pretty easily. 1 person has voted this message useful |
