I'm a newbie here at this website but I've
been studying German for about 2 years now and have recently decided to pick up Finnish. Living here in the States its hard to find people to practice with but luckily I have a tutor to help me with my German. She says I'm doing very well with it but I still feel like I'm a complete beginner sometimes. Especially when it comes to speaking and listening, I think I sound like a three year old, lol. On the bright side though I was able to go on a two week volunteer mission to Marburg and I can definetly hear the difference in my speaking and I can even understand natives a little better. I was skeptical at first about how useful immersion would be especially for such a short time but I can see how learning like a child can be beneficial. My biggest inspiration for continuing on studying German is another young African- American woman on YouTube under the handle KemushiChan. She's studied Japanese for almost a decade and her dedication to the Japanese language and culture makes me want to achieve fluency in both German and Finnish. I can't wait to read more stories of yalls language learning journeys. I know this journal entry kinda sucks but I'll get it together in the next post, lol. EDIT: I'll be using this logbook as my German TAC logbook .My German goals are to go from A2 to B1, increase vocabulary, and improve speaking and listening comprehension skills. Erm... why do you think that this journal entry is bad? You probably haven't seen mine :D Anyway, I enjoyed this entry and since we have common TL, I probably will be following your log :)

I'm always so self-conscious about...well almost everything! It even bleeds into my language learning. I'm always nervous to speak to natives. If I were studying Russian, I would probably never work up enough nerve on Skype to say anything past hello to you. Well, the more you'll be fighting this the easier it all will vanish, what can I say? :) I wasn't sure if I'm able to do something with my English on daily basis and thanks to HTLAL I see that I'm able, for example :D

What is HTLAL? I've seen quite a few abbreviations on here that I don't know what they mean.

yes, it's this forum haha. welcome! Just in case, you're not required to start separate logs for your languages. One log is enough :)
See the forum glossary for more weird abbreviations ;) also, HP=Harry Potter, LOTR=Lord of the Rings. These books are widely available in translation and in audiobook form, so they are popular here even though most people aren't crazy fans or anything :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I've started using Memrise to expand my vocabulary and I must say I'm really liking the methods it employes. Believe it or not it has never occurred to me to use mnemonics for vocabulary. I had heard of it but I didn't think it would work for me but I'm a believer. I'm also dusting off the Slow German podcast and plan on adding it to my audio training regimen. Before my trip, I was using it as listening comprehension practice but I was still struggling to understand what was being said. Hopefully spending some time around natives will have made my brain ripe for absorbing and understanding spoken German. 1 person has voted this message useful |
