1. Classical Latin, which I'm actively learning at the moment.
2. Ancient Greek 3. Arabic 4. Spanish(as spoken in Spain, not in the Americas) 5. German (I attempted to teach myself using an old 'teach yourself German' book at about 12, but the novelty must have worn off quite quickly, because I can't remember much more than 'Der, Die, Das', 10 years on.) Actually it's not necessary to reach native or near-native fluency to become a pologlot..
From my point of view, if you can use the language in daily life such as reading newspapers, watching TVs, etc in a foreign language effectively, you are already successful.

I'm also the type that, if I'm going to start learning a language, I'm not going to be satisfied until I reach near-native (or even native for the language(s) most important to me) in it.
Anyway, here's my five, along with my reasons for learning them: 1. Japanese (Definitely top priority for me, since I plan on living in Japan more or less permanently) 2. Mandarin (Because it's such an important Asian language that's very useful these days) 3. French (Because I started learning it in school and love it. Also because it is a useful language with lots of great literature and a fascinating culture.) 4. Russian (Because I am so intrigued by the beauty of this language, because I would like to travel to Russia and read books in Russian, and also because it is a challenging language quite different from the others I know. Looks impressive on a polyglot's resume, too.) 5. Korean (Because East Asia is basically my specialty region, and Korean is an important language in this region. I also love Korean music and movies, Korean food, and Korean culture, and would love to travel to Korea someday.) If I could learn these five languages really well, I think I would be quite satisfied. =) I think it's better to know a few languages really well than to know a lot of languages only on a basic level. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
