It depends on the specific course, but generally there are videos, reading materials, tests and possibly a peer-assessed task (essay etc). For example, I posted my essay here on lang-8 after the course ended. Also, there's always a forum, but I suppose the activity can vary, though all classes I've taken so far (on Coursera) have had very active forums. I've just started a course about the Mediterranean on MiriadaX and I haven't checked out the forum yet.
See this project too.

I really enjoy Buenos Días América! I just prefer listening to it while I'm walking or driving. To just listen at home - I
find that I zone out.
re: courses - there are a variety of video lectures every week, readings, assignments (essays, reflections, practical
assignments), peer assessment, and forum discussions. I only audit courses, which means that I listen, read (if
interested) and scan the forums. It might be more engaging if I did the assignments, but I could barely get my
assignments in on time when I was in "real" school! Ha!

Haha me too but online courses are more fun and less stressful.

We learned a week ago that our beloved dog Chase had a football-sized tumour on his kidney. Things progressed
quickly from there. Yesterday we said good-bye to our best friend and constant companion through an ocean of
tears.
Chase knew the word for cookie in four languages and the word for come in none.
He thought that Skype language exchanges were the perfect time to ask to be let out. And in. And out. And in.
He liked it better when I sang in Tagalog than when I sang in Spanish.
He loved it when I put in my earbuds to listen to FSI or a podcast, because he knew that it was a time for a long
walk.
For nine and a half years, he was my friend and my family. I miss him.
Sleep well, Chase. You're such a good boy.

I am so sorry for you loss. I lost my best friend, Sam, a few years ago and miss him
terribly. I hope you find comfort in all the good memories you have of him.
God bless,
Tom

Oh Stelle, Your post brought tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your best language buddy. (I remember those long walks with him that you wrote about this winter.) My thoughts are with you and your husband. Sending all my love to Canada.
