Ooh, mag ik ook meedoen? Eigenlijk neem ik nu een cursus Nederlands op school, maar
waarschijnlijk kan ik het niet doorgaan(?), omdat ik geen tijd ervoor heb. Ik wil graag
met jullie oefenen.

Okay, I've decided what I'm going to do.

By going after Afrikaans, I would be screwing up the Dutch challenge for other learners, I think. Therefore I'm going to do my own completely separate solo-challenge in Afrikaans!

I will start in mid December and finish a the end of January - roughly 6 weeks.

I'll be starting a log sometime soon explaining my intended methods. Given my background in English and German, I may well go straight for the jugular and use the ultra-hardcore Schliemann method. (OlafP is currently using this for Russian, but I reckon it would be even more effective with Afrikaans - given the very simple grammar.)

This is going to be FUN! :-D

QUESTION FOR DUTCH NATIVE SPEAKERS

Can you guys understand Afrikaans without any problems?

For example, I found a Youtube clip where the author Deon Meyer is talking in Afrikaans about his work:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB58Is4vy2I&NR=1

Can you guys follow something like this without any problems?

We've been having a discussion about this subject for the last couple of days on this thread. I watched the clip and could understand the gist of it. Sometimes I could understand an entire sentence effortlessly and sometimes a whole sentence would go completely over my head.

If you guys are going to try to communicate in Dutch and Afrikaans, I'm not sure if it's going to work. Writing won't be a problem I think but speaking could go either way. It might not work at all but on the other hand, not being so used to the sounds of Dutch might actually make is easier to tune into Afrikaans. I think it could be a very interesting experiment.

I've got to think about this. I was actually considering doing a month of Dutch sometime over the summer, but this is a little sudden. However, I like the challenge. I'd have to continue with Japanese though, so I don't know if it would spread my efforts too thin.

Ek dink dit is 'n uitstekend idee! Ek sal graag die nederlandse taal leer.
Ek kan nie Skype gebruik nie (Ek het nie 'n webcam nie) maar ek sal nederlands boodskappes hier skryf. Ek hoop ek sal nie nederlands en afrikaans uitspraak verwar nie.

I think this is an excellent idea! I will definitely learn Dutch.
I don't have Skype or a webcam, but I will write messages in Dutch. Hopefully I won't confuse Dutch and Afrikaans pronunciation.

EDIT: I meant pronunciation not spelling, so I changed it.

Jullie spreeken goed nederlands, waar komen jullie vandaan?

Trouwens, mag ik je even voorstellen. Ik heet Noriyuki,
Ik woon in Zurich, maar ik wil Duits leren. Ik vind het Duits een leuke taal.

Sorry, il spreek niet goed nederlands.

ps: oh my, I think that's the best Dutch that I can muster to write here in this forum so far, it's definitely still at a very raw awkward stage. :(
