If the proposed five new languages could just somehow pop up in my head without any toil and labour then I would probably choose Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, Turkish and either Finnish or Hungarian. In the real world though, it is quite unlikely that I will ever learn any of these languages, - at least I want to relearn Latin first and then add maybe three or four Slavic languages (and in between maybe even have a look at Esperanto) before I try my luck at anything outside my Indoeuropean soap bubble.

I think it deserves a topic of its own, but here's my list of languages I'd certainly want to pop up in my head:

1. Karelian - I'm eager to study it, but there are so few resources:(
2. Welsh - I'm going to study it someday, but I don't think I'll ever be as fluent as I'd like to
the rest are the ones I most likely won't study at all:
3. Japanese
4. Arabic
5. a native American language

I would never avoid a language because it's difficult, so the languages that I'm learning are the same as the pop up in my head languages.

I would never avoid a language because it is difficult - I only avoid those that would take too long to learn.

I've always hesitated to contribute to this thread and the others like it. I know it's just an exercise, but it seems so restricting to even think about!

I guess I would focus on these "big" ones, if I absolutely had to choose:

1. Mandarin
2. Russian
3. Arabic
4. Hindi
5. Portuguese

It kind of says something that I'm working on ones other than these (Mandarin excepted); namely, that I think I'll have time to study all of them!

Optimism is useful!
