What a great idea. I never do translations like that. It gets thinking outside the box. It sure gives you a new respect for simultaneuos interpreters!

It would be great if we could have a translation of the week or something, following the same format?

Hopefully this is right. Italiano:

Ciao Lisa

I must say that that is very well done daniel95. What is striking is that although I speak Spanish (not Italian) I could get the jist of this with relative ease, aside from a few phrases that anyone who drinks alot of wine would know (Bella etc., not that I do mind you?). I found out a couple of years ago when I was in Florence (Firenza) I could converse surprisingly well.

Off the topic a little bit, I am just wondering where all the "polyglots" are. Iverson who in my opiniơn seems to be the impeccable poly has been the only one to take the challenge. C'mon polys step up to the plate and put you're two cents in.

All right, let's rock 'n roll. I only picked the beginner text because it's the shortest and also the lowest common denominator between all my languages! Sometimes I picked proxy words because I tried to do the whole thing without a dictionary (no idea how to say postcard in Arabic so I picked "picture".)
I found "nice" to be a little tough to translate, even in languages I know well. Again, in Arabic I just picked "jamil" (pretty).
Also bear in mind I couldn't use accents for Spanish/Portuguese.

Beginner:
Hi Lisa,
here is a postcard of my town. It is not very big, but it is nice. Please tell me more about your town. How many people live in it? What is particularly nice about your town? Where do you go in the evenings?

John

German:
Hallo Lisa,
Was gibt besonders toll in deiner Stadt? Wohin gehst du Abends aus?

Arabic:
Ya Lisa,
hadhihi hiya suura madinati. Laysat kabira jiddan, walakinnaha jamila. Quli akthar 3an madinatik. Kam chakhsan yaskununa hounak? Ma khassatan jamil fi madinatik? Ila ayna tadhhabina fil masaa'?

Finnish:
Hei Lisa,
Mitä on sinusta erityisen kivaa kylässäsi? Missä yleensä käyt iltaisin?

Portuguese (Brazil):
Oi Lisa,
Quanta gente vive nela? Onde você costuma sair a noite?

Spanish:
Hola Lisa,

On second thought I would use "chevere", or "bacan" in Spanish for "nice".

I think this is a great idea. I'm happy that Jinx revived this thread. I will attempt to translate the first two passages into Swedish. I will probably make many mistakes so I welcome any corrections.

Hejsan Lisa

Thank you very much. I am so glad I won the prize. I would like to travel to the USA in July because of my job. Will I be able to see my cousin Ann in Dallas? I know the tour only goes through Houston... Also I would really like to go swimming in the ocean. I hope there will be time for that.
Yours sincerely,

Michelle Dubois

Michelle Dubois

Well done. This is why i found this exercise so interesting. Vietnamese doesn't really have a word for nice and the tenses can be a little difficult to translate. It's interesting to try to put the prose you are writing into a different language and maintain the context.
