I am glad to have seen one person enjoy the Cuban Spanish (albeit mentioned awhile back). I tend to just hear it's hard to understand, never actually a compliment!

As Spanish is my native, I vote Italian. I find it absolutely beautiful, probably since it phonetically relates to Spanish yet with that rather attractive rhythm added on top. It seems most native Spanish-speakers I know have a strong preference for it over French, though in the past year or so I've started really enjoying French. I'd say it slightly beats out Brazilian Portuguese, and I've yet to hear Romanian or European Portuguese so I can't comment on those.

The mother of them all, Latin.

Phonetically, it isn't too special, but I find Latin grammar more elegant than those of the Vulgar Tongues.

Even though I think they all sound interesting and I enjoy hearing people speak any of them I chose Italian. That may even change as I learn more. I think part of why I think Italian is one of the best right now is because I am not used to hearing/reading it often as I am now with Spanish. (And I learned French for years in school and hear it often on the bus) So yes... new = interesting/beautiful (lately at least)

For anyone who is interested, Omniglot.com gives a sample text for every language and for many of them (including Romanian) a recording is included... It isn't very long but it might help to get a sense of the language. Here is the link:

(If you would like to see/hear another language, just replace 'romanian' in the link with for example, 'danish.' It should not be capitalized.)

I'd voted for French. My personal preference for the sound of Romance languages is as follows:
#1 French
#2 Italian
#3 Spanish
#4 Portuguese and Romanian

It could have been interesting to correlate people's vote for the most musical/beautiful sounding language with what native tongue(s) they are coming from. :)

[ʒ]: "j" in Jardin (French), beautiful.

[dʒ]: "g(i)" in Giardino (Italian), beautiful too.

[X]: "j" in Jardín (Spanish), like guttural "h", sounds a little harsh.

I voted French but I just spent some time on this site listening to all the different romance languages and I have to say that the voice of the person speaking them is really important to me. Spanish sounds wonderful in a strong man's voice but annoying on a woman. I don't really like Portuguese because the speakers both sound as if they have a speech disorder. Italian sounds wonderful but can't quite match up with French. This is the first time I've heard Catalan and I really like it! Romanian and Occitan both sound nice but neither does very much to me.
