Unit six, and the dative case introduced. Teach Yourself is starting to get on my nerves more and more - PLENTY of good explanations but NOT ENOUGH BLOODY GRAMMAR PRACTICE!
They need more translations and fill-out-the-blanks exercises to really shine up their series (a bigger vocab list would NOT go amiss either), but what is in there is all pretty useful. What they do right is introduce a lot of vocabulary through reading comprehension and dialogues, and that is going reasonably well (though the dialogues are so hammy it hurts). The old Colloquial pdf has therefore proven to be a boon - no dialogues, but some great, great exercises with *translations* and *sentence-forming* which means I can dream up adjectival agreement in the nominative now. Today I saw the second episode of a documentary concerning Russia's foreign policy, and in particular Putin's antics and behaviour concerning the revolts in Ukraine and Georgia in the past decade.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out I can actually make out some words in the Russian spoken language though by no means everything. Class is going great - my записка was greeted by enthusiasm by my teacher (though I did admit to having a native speaker look over it first. But there were only four mistakes anyway, so it's pretty good all in all). Now continuing with lesson 4 of Colloquial, and reaffirm my knowledge of the genitive singular in Russian. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Genitive plurals are now the order of the day in Teach Yourself. It's not so complicated for adjectives, but for nouns... who the hell dreamed this stuff up?
I was also pleasantly surprised to find out what Mr Bulykin tried to say with his sole Russian sentence in his most recent interview for Ajax TV (Я забил сто мячей). Things did not progress as planned this weekend - Guys Night! This means I spent my weekend drinking, gaming, and making excellent roast beef - so not much Russian has been done over the weekend. Oh well. I'll catch up. Vocabulary is going fast. As always. One last unrelated note: the fact Eluveitie uses Gaulish lyrics in their work amazes me. (The ancient dead Celtic language, yes). Decided to catch up on all the new vocabulary piling up in my Anki deck. 3 wrong out of 120 or so cards? The meme would say: неплохо!
Also decided to just rush through Colloquial's fifth unit. I am liking this book more and more - this 1993 version of Colloquial is like Teach Yourself, but with MORE VOCABULARY and BETTER GRAMMAR EXERCISES. Ok, so because it's a pdf I don't have dialogues. But then I always preferred writing everything anyway. And I have other dialogues to learn speech from, thankfully, and class. In any case, lesson 5 was a breeze, and the grammar mostly covered things I already knew (the possessive construction, some irregular verbs which I had already covered except for the verb "can, to be able to" which is good. Teach Yourself's plural genitive is still escaping me more or less with all the useless endings, but I think I can remember most. The double endings can be confusing though. But I am sure I will get through that with colloquial Russian soon. No worries. I'll have seen it, have familiarized myself with it and the real grammar gets done later. Spaced Grammar Repetition. By this time though I have learned that if you want to learn Russian - only use Teach Yourself as a guideline and don't use it as your sole information source. The lack of grammar exercises and big vocab at the back is a real pain in the ass, no matter how good they are with explaining the finer grammatical details. Do yourself a favour and get something else if you like this type of approach to complement it. I, for example, when I am done, might start thinking about some Assimil when I am done with the whole thing. (Three books to work from is enough for me, adding a fourth which uses a different method would be confusing). There we go. Notch up another 90 minutes or so for the Jornster and we're getting somewhere. 1 person has voted this message useful |
