There's this old house in my hometown. I often take a peek through the window: I can see
the fireplace, and above the mantel there is an inscription saying:

TOSTED OCH' AN TAN.

I've seen those words for years, every time I walk around there, wondering what language
that could be, and what it means.

The place is in Southern Belgium, Wallonia, a French and Walloon-speaking area.
However, this is definitely not a romance language. Looks Celtic, or Scandinavian.

Does anybody have an idea? Warning: this is a real question, I don't have the answer.

I'll take a chance and guess from the script that it's Amharic.
(if not then maybe Tigre or Tigrinya?)

Here's mine:

יִכְדַמְן אַיְיִנַגָא יפּרעו גְמַצָר. יִשוֹפִגַג רבי נּג דְיְנָג שוֹפוֹש נִדְרע שוֹפוֹש יִכיווֹאַנ
ixəddamn ay n-ga i pərʿu g° maṣər. i-ss-ufġ aġ əṛbbi ənnəġ dinnaġ s ufus ən ddrʿ, s ufus ikuwan.

Translation: Servants of Pharaoh is what we were in Egypt. Our God brought us out thence with a mighty arm,
with a strong arm.

no googling :)

I think it's Hebrew...??

Looks like Polish as far as I'm aware.

"Dihtetgo ahte "ukulele" lea haváijagiel loatnasátni?"
"Did you know that "ukulele" is loanword from Hawaiian?"

Meadow Mari.

I'm repeating morinkhuur's question, because that transliteration looks nothing like Hebrew:

יִכְדַמְן אַיְיִנַגָא יפּרעו גְמַצָר. יִשוֹפִגַג רבי נּג דְיְנָג שוֹפוֹש נִדְרע שוֹפוֹש יִכיווֹאַנ
