I am actually in the process of taking this challenge as well.
The only difference is I am focusing on two
languages at the moment (Russian and Polish).. I know that it is one of those long term
goals and one has to
be patient if they wish
to achieve it to a desirable level. I created a blog dedicated for me to document my
journey in trying to learn
the Slavic languages. I believe this will help with my motivation and it gives me a
place to document my
progress. Are you planing on updating us on your progress? I know I'd be interested
and it would again give
me motivation reading what others have to say about the same tough challenge I am
undertaking :) heck I'm
sure I can learn from others too!

This is the link to my blog. Good luck to
you :)

The Penguin Russian Course explains Russian pronunciation in a nonsense way, learn the
alphebet and everything about pronunciation rules in another place, because nearly
everything there is wrong.

That's interesting. Would you be able to provide an example of how a pronounciation is
incorrect and how you would better teach it or provide a source that is much better? Also if I remember
correctly, the book is actually aimed at British English speakers, which might be why the pronunciation guide
isn't that great.

Out of all the opportunities that I've had to speak with native speakers in their language, Russians were the
most impressed with my accent and to the point where a few of them told me they would forget I wasn't
Russian, for they considered my accent native speaker like. Of course this was at the height of my language
studies which I tooke 2 years off and I am only again starting to relearn Russian.

Perhaps what may have helped was the fact that I used pimsleur first to learn Russian in the beginning and I
tried to replicate the sounds I was hearing. Also, a good Russian friend of mine was helping me in the
beginning as well.

So I would definitely recommend someone that is startling out Russian to find a a copy of pimsleur or find a
different source for learning the pronunciation.

Thanks for pointing that information out buddy. I completely forgot about how the new penguin course was
aimed at certain English speakers. Again, it's been two years since I've studied Russian :)

Thanks a ton! I had a look at it and it was helpful. Now I understand better what I was being told. :)

As you're bilingual, I recommend using Spanish-based explanations of the Russian pronunciation... and same with most other languages, really :D

A useful resource for learning Russian vocabulary is the following: Leveraging Your Russian with Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes

http://www.amazon.com/Leveraging-Russian-Roots-Prefixes-Suff ixes/dp/0893573027/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1338300615 &sr=1-2

Learning how the basic parts of longer Russian words come together has really helped me to learn the vocabulary much faster. I've been using a copy at my university's library, but it's available used online for only $20, which isn't too bad I suppose. I wonder if parts of it are available for free online?

Sorry for not posting for quite a while. Life has caught me and I need to attend to it.

I am thinking if it is possible that I take part in various challenges for each of my
Slavic languages now, for example: Super challenger for Russian, 6WC for Czech and
Serbian ? Is it way overkill?

Does anyone here have plans to learn all the languages in a particular language family like what have in mind?

I like the family in general, since it varies so greatly and a host of other reasons. I have my eye on Russian, so it may be my next plan when I've gotten my French to fluency and my Spanish to at least intermediate.

Quote:
4th level: Rusyn (east), Sorbian (west), Macedonian (south)

If you're serious about going after this group, I suggest keeping an eye out for some materials. That would be your biggest impediment by this point.

I want to learn Japanese and Korean and possibly Chinese way further down the line. And none of them
really have anything in common.
