[Français] Le sexisme (inhérent ?) de la langue française
Si nous voulions décrire le monde actuel où travaillent des médecins des deux sèxes, comment pourrions-nous le faire sans tomber dans l'abîme du sexisme linguistique ? C'est la question qu'a posé s_allard dans le fil de discussion "Lack of noun gender in English." Par exemple, si nous cherchons un médecin homme ou femme, nous pouvons écrire (après s_allard) : Je cherche un(e) médecin(e) compétent(e). Je cherche un/e médecin/e compétent/e. Je cherche un médecin compétent homme ou femme. Je cherche un homme ou femme médecin compétent ou compétente. Des phrases qui laissent à désirer, soit parce qu'elles ne peuvent pas se lire à voix haute (les deux premières), soit parce qu'elles sont lourdes (les deux dernières). J'ai offert la phrase, "Je cherche une personne compétente qui est médecin" qui n'est pas très belle non plus et qui a le défaut qu'elle laisse la possibilité d'une personne qui est compétente dans un domaine quelconque -- mais pas dans la médecine ! Puis je pensais que nous pourrions laisser sous-entendu la "compétence" de la personne qui est médecin ; après tout, qui chercherait un(e) médecin incompétent(e) (ok, parfois pour le / la poursuivre en justice) ? :-) Peut-être que s_allard a raison et il faudrait une modification fondamentale aux structures grammaticales du français. C'est les vacances de Noël et j'en profite pour regarder quelques films, dont les suivants :
La double vie de Véronique Alceste à bicyclette Conte de printemps Conte d'été Conte d'hiver Je crois que mon préféré est "La double vie de Véronique", très beau film avec excellente musique et une histoire mystique ou peut-être surnaturelle. Le premier tiers est en polonais mais la plupart de la dialogue est en français. J'ai remarqué que j'ai compris facilement tous les films sans sous-titres. Il y a toujours des mots qui m'échappent mais regarder un film français est de plus en plus une expérience de pur plaisir et pas d'effort et je peux capter non seulement les "grandes lignes" mais aussi certaines des petites nuances et des blagues. Writing this post in English because this content would be much too difficult to write with my current level of Spanish...
As far as my Spanish studies go, they were put on the back-burner at exam time. Since my French is much stronger, perhaps it should have taken the "hit", but I'm finding it's quite hard to set aside time for a weaker language when a far stronger one is available just begging to be used, and it becomes even harder the less time I have to distribute. :-) There are so many native Spanish speakers on Verbling that I think daily conversations should be possible, so my plan so far is this: work on building / rebuilding my base with Espagnol débutant, and at the same time chatting for 30 minutes to 1 hour with natives online. I'm thinking these chats will build both my comprehension and production at the same time. After that, I'm not so sure. I doubt I'll be ready to jump into using mostly native media after just the 90 days of lessons the book offers, so I may try to tackle Perfectionnement Espagnol (Assimil) while also continuing the daily conversations, which should bring me to around a solid six months. And then I can see where I want to go from there. I've been on Verbling the past few days and gotten a number of (unsolicited) favorable evaluations of my Spanish accent, so it looks like I'm heading in the right direction as far as that goes. [Español] Mi mujer me dio un Kindle y hoy compré mi primero libro electrónico, Spanish For Reading. He leido el primero capítulo y me parece muy útil! :-)

Taking stock of what I've accomplished this year in French:
1. From never having spoken the language with another person, to having attended about 50 Meetups, had some hundreds of Skype conversations, and getting by pretty well for four days in France. 2. From comprehending the occasional few minutes of dialogue in radio shows and hardly ever comprehending films, to comprehending most radio shows easily and many films as well with good concentration. 3. From reading news and opinion sites slowly and with some difficulty, to generally reading them quite easily and rarely having to look things up. 4. I have 34 pages of log from this year (much of it thanks to the great people who have commented, of course), with 23 of them written almost exclusively in French. It's been a great year. When I first started learning in 2012, I really didn't know how much fun it could be, or how much time I would (gladly) devote to the language. Je crois qu'il est meilleur que la phrase aille en subjonctif,
<Je cherche un médicin(e) que soit compétent(e)> ou <Je cherche une personne que soit compétente> parce qu'il ne se sait pas déjà qu'une personne existe, comme en l'espagnol: <Busco un médico que sea competente> (sin la a personal debido a la falta de existencia de tal médico) En français: Je cherche... que [subjonctif] ...
