Happy New Year everybody! С новьим годом!

This year I will take part in TAC for Russian. It's unsure whether we are one team or
two haha. First off, forgive me if this post is difficult to make sense of; I'm
hungover.

Why Russian?
I teach English in Moscow and have been here for two months. I haven't learnt much past
the basic greetings and am hard-pressed to even count, but in recent days I have made
good on my resolution to get to grips with the language. So far, I've not been too
scared by the verb conjugations and whatnot. Pronunciation is the main thorn in my
side.
I'm not short of native speakers to practice with either, which is very helpful.

Sometimes, it's unavoidable! Last night my boyfriend and I took part in a little party
in the lobby of our building with the building manager's family and some other
residents. We spoke about work, England and also religion! I knew enough words such as
'respect/уважение' and 'understand/понимать' to get the gist of the conversation. It
was difficult as it was 3am and we'd just been to a party.

Goals for 2013
When I start a language, my goal is fluency. Often times I don't reach that point, but
I began Chinese in China and believe myself to be B2 in that language, so I have good
feelings about how my Russian will progress. We're unsure of how long we will stay
here, but we are here until September at least.
For now, let's say I would like to be B1 by September.
Also, I want to at least keep my Chinese at the level it is. I think I can maintain
this language at least, if not improve a little. I have no fixed goal for now.

Resources
I have a heap of resources, mostly books I bought here. Being a European city, there's
free newspapers galore. It's interesting how many words are adapted from English which
makes reading a lot more accessible. I'm going to stick with my main textbook and
supplement with TY, Assimil and my grammar workbook. I have Pimsleur as well which I
hope to use to improve my pronunciation.

I'm a little nervous about writing in Russian here, but I will try soon enough. Please
be patient with my attempts! Here's to a great 2013!

Hi! I am on the second Russian team as well. That's so cool you live in Moscow! I am
planning to go there with my mother very soon, and lots of other places in Russia, too. I
really look forward to following your log, since you (I think?) are the only one on this
team (or the other team, for that matter) that actually lives in Russia. It's a very
different experience learning a language in the country that speaks it rather than from
home, so it should be very interesting to hear about your experiences there! And don't be
nervous! We are all here to learn and make mistakes. I can assure you I have written some
truly awful things in my logs before, and I don't regret it at all. Good luck!

С Новым Годом!! :)

Hi! You are firmly in team Mir now, so you may change your title :-)

I really look forward to having you on our team - I bet you can give us lots of little tidbits of daily life in Russia which the rest of us would love to hear about.

And I am sure you will be fluent in Russian by the time you finish :-)

Hi Toffeeliz!

Have a great stay in Moscow! That’s an excellent opportunity to make huge and fast progress in Russian: I’m sure you’ll make all of us in Team MIR both proud and envious of your success.

Привет Toffeeliz! What better place to learn Russian than Moscow! Well, maybe St.
Petersburg, but hey, Moscow isn't bad :). Good luck with your studies. I'll be following
your logs with interest.

Hey Toffeeliz! Hope you can use and apply your Russian knowledge right away!!

Did you know your nickname looks like "Tô feliz" (= I'm happy) in Portuguese? =D
