Search for "shadowing" on this forum. It's a method used by Dr. Alexander Arguelles, who knows over 30 languages, and the entire point is that you have to walk with a brisk pace and good posture as you practice. I find this very helpful because it keeps the blood flowing.

What with iPhone headphones having integrated microphones, it's pretty hard to look out of place talking to
yourself in public where I live these days.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I love the idea of using more podcasts. While I do
listen to a few, it's not by any means a huge part of my learning. Maybe I need to find
and listen to more of them - who knows, maybe I'll even be motivated to clean the house
while listening. Ha!
I will look up "shadowing". I already talk or sing to myself or the dog when walking - I
don't really care if people think I'm nuts.
And yes, I could see language learning taking on such an importance that you let your
health slide. I tend to be somewhat of an obsessive person when it comes to learning
something new. Thanks for the reminder to maintain balance in my life!

Yes, now at last I can get away with talking to myself in public....even without
headphones and an integrated microphone...

It depends. If you happen to pass by a native speaker of the language that you are
shadowing (very likely in urban areas), it might look weird as the person will notice
that it's not a normal conversation. :)

When I was shadowing Yiddish, that was a risk I was more than willing to take. On the very unlikely off-chance that someone recognized it as Yiddish, they almost certainly would have stopped to chat, because it's so rare to run across Yiddish speakers these days (outside of certain areas of Brooklyn, at least).
I'm sure it would have been a bit different with something like Spanish.

My understanding is that standing eliminates a lot of the health risk of sitting- you
don't necessarily have to be moving. With that theory in mind I've been working from a
high table for anything that doesn't involve a computer, and I skype on my phone.
I would still recommend doing some other kind of daily exercise as well. I used to try to
sneak some learning into my gym time, but now I just focus on doing what I'm there to do.
