Serpent, what exactly is sexist about going
out to meet girls? Flirting is fun and doing
it in a foreign language is just more fun.
Would you say that about him if he said he
went to pick up guys?

I am probably the biggest introvert there is
and I don't get anything out of huge crowds. I
like learning foreign languages to be social
with the friends I do have. Some of these are
foreigners. But speaking to them and going
out with them is still fun. I spent six days
in Tomsk socialising with practically only
girls. Is it sexist? No. I am equally happy
to hang out with guys. But if I think they are
cute then yea I will try to flirt.

Exercise is good. You don't have to go to the
gym. Just do something you like. Being in
shape and getting sleep helps everyone.

Yeah I agree mezzo's post wasn't really sexist, tasteless perhaps.

My tip: run a half marathon every other day
(it's what I do, it takes only 2 hours and it makes a difference).

It was sexist because it ignores the fact that there are women present here, even on this specific thread. Even if you think it's okay to brag about women in front of other women, they probably don't think it's okay, they are just used to it. (also, would a man ever congrat another man with his success in conquering a man?)

In an ideal world where a woman would not be labelled a whore for saying something similar, this would sound somewhat better.

I'm not saying you hate women - it sure seems like you don't :) It's just an example of everyday sexism.

Also, i was speaking of the remark and not the fact. If you don't do anything creepy, I'm fine with that both as a social thing and as a language learning thing.

But isn't sexism treating someone as if they are inferior due to their sex?

In no way did he say that the women he tried to hook up with were stupid because of it, and just because there are women here doesn't make the remark sexist, if it made someone uncomfortable it could be sexual harassment if the comments were made repeatedly.

It would take me a lot longer than 2 hours!

(and even longer to recover).

Well, I do feel that bragging about that is treating women as inferior, objectifying them. As I said, a reaction to a non-straight man speaking like that about men would probably be different (even without taking the possible homophobia into account).

And if something isn't okay when done repeatedly, it's probably just not okay in the first place. Because the feeling is not considerably different when you get repeated nasty remarks from the same person or from different people. What's "just a remark" for a man is one of many for a woman.

But let's not be too much offtopic. If you feel the need to discuss it more, just ask for your female friends' opinions.

Exactly right.

Please get a life.

Now you're talking about "homophobia"! You've strayed so far from the topic and
politicized this thread needlessly.

For those of us with lives beyond this forum and the internet there is nothing at all
wrong with talking about chatting up women (or men in their case). That comment was made
in relation to the other person making a silly remark about social learners being "crap"
at languages which is rubbish.

In the context of language learning, dating is a great way to get out and practise.
