Hey Tarvos, just stopping by to say that I enjoyed reading (the sections I could) about the solar system and your book supply. I wish there were a way you could find a dirt cheap tablet so you could read your pdfs in bed but it sounds like Mama and Papa Tarvos will bring you a fresh supply. :)

I have spent most of this weekend entertaining my parents who came to visit me in
China. My mother seemed to enjoy this trip but my father was having a bit of trouble
adjusting, to, well, China being China. The upshot of all this was that my parents
don't speak a word of Mandarin, leading to me having to do a lot of impromptu
interpreting. As it turns out, my Mandarin still is not perfect, but it's definitely
reached the intermediate stage. I am conversational at this point in Mandarin (not
fluent, though) and can handle all basic interactions likely to occur while
travelling. I have a decent enough grasp on tones and pronunciation that my wishes are
clear to the Chinese, and in most cases I get the response (though I will miss
details). I'm still working on upping my reading comprehension and vocabulary, and
when I do that (and learn some more complex grammatical structures) we'll be able to
call my Mandarin fluent. Maybe that will be by the end of this trip (I still have a
few months), maybe it won't. But I can at least hold my own solidly in all basic
things Mandarin.

Now work meetings, that's another issue.

Just for fun I've booked an hour of Finnish; let's see how far we get. My brother is
moving to Finland for a few months in the fall; maybe I'll get a chance to go? Maybe I
won't, what with all the other trips planned.

Now I should get back to studying or reading, instead of accidentally double posting...

Today I can proudly announce that I have started my preparations for one of my goals -
to sit the highest level of Russian examinations that exists on this planet, namely
the ТРКИ-4. I plan to be able to teach Russian in the future, work in this language.
Apart from French (which is the other language I am going to attempt this kind of
thing in; I am fully capable of doing it in English and don't need to prove it,
considering that I already have that type of education). I'm noticing many small
details of the Russian language that I wasn't entirely aware of before (or never paid
attention to).

My Russian itself is of course at a very high level already but this is probably the
equivalent of sitting a C2 exam. So we can finally say that my path to my third C2
language has begun (aside from Dutch and English where I have obviously achieved this
level). I don't think it worth it to do it for more languages than Russian and French
(it would be theoretically possible for me to try it in something like German or
Italian, but in Italian my level is too low and I simply don't care enough about
German to do it right now; if I can do Russian and French I may consider it, though).
