Today there wasn't much to do at work, so I spent a shameful amount of "on-the-clock" time studying languages. :) I downloaded a new app for my iPod called "ChineseWriter." Its capabilities are limited (it's a free app) but I was very impressed all the same. In the bottom bit of the screen it presents you with the image of a character along with the pinyin (inc. tone), meaning in English, and sometimes an explanation of the meaning of the character components, to help you remember it. Then on a large virtual piece of paper which takes up the rest of the screen, you draw the character with your fingertip. Every line has to be done in the right direction and order, or else it won't appear on the screen. If you do it correctly, the line will appear, so you're literally virtually drawing the character.

(Note aside: I think that last sentence was the first time I ever got to use the words "literally virtually" right next to each other and actually mean both of them.)

Anyway, then I was supposed to look up internship info for an environmental organization in Mexico (I work in an environmental-studies graduate program), and of course all the websites mentioning this organization were in Spanish, so I spent a long time just cruising around reading them. Cool discovery of the day: the Spanish word for "environmental" is "ambiental." I guess it makes sense when you think about it, but it was a fun surprise for me. I love etymology.

It's weird to me how I still find it easier to read Spanish and Italian than French or German, despite having studied the latter two far more intensely – and never having studied a word of Spanish at all. It just doesn't exert my brain to read ES/IT the way it does when I'm reading FR/DE. It'll be even crazier once I've learned Portuguese – by that point I'll probably just wake up one morning speaking fluent Spanish without any study. ;)
