Reflections at this juncture

Latin's pretty much fallen by the wayside in deference to my intense new schedule involving my recent influx of language-learning materials. I'm not crossing it off my list, because I knew from the start that it and Esperanto would be my secondary targets for this project, only to be tackled if I felt able to keep up with the Big Three: German, French, and Italian.

That said, I just came across a virtual copy of "Teach Yourself Esperanto" and am really enjoying it. I knew I wasn't quite at the level to get a lot out of reading forums and websites in Esperanto yet, but I was beyond all of lernu's introductory courses and wanted something a bit more advanced. Jen TY! It's a lot of "busy work," especially as I've assigned myself the task of typing out every word of Esperanto in the exercises, but I know that's what I need to remember all the vocabulary. Vocab's always been my biggest problem in Esperanto, because when I'm trying to construct a word I haven't actually learned before, I never know which root to go for: the German, the Latin, the modern Romance, the English...?

I've got quite a few resources which I'm really enjoying using right now. For French I have the dynamic duo of Assimil for audio and Teach Yourself for text. My French pronunciation is still shaky at this point – I need a lot more audio input. I know theoretically how almost everything is pronounced (now including, thanks to the FSI French Phonology course, subtle differences such as those between "ais" and "é," or between "je" and "jeu"), but it won't become automatic until I've listened to a LOT more passive audio. I think I need to find more pop music in French to listen to, seeing as that's what did wonders for my German pronunciation.

Reading "L'Étranger" is also really helping with my French vocab, as is "Harry Potter" with my German. I need to find something appropriate for my Italian level – maybe I'll take a look at my graded reader "Letture varie." On first glance, the beginning is rather basic for me at this level, but it will be good to solidify some purely "intuited" things. I also found online a great old Italian reader from 1873, with charming little stories that were actually quite interesting. Maybe I'll return to it as well, if I can find the link... ah, here it is: "First pages of Italian prose reading." Wow, I forgot how much fun this reader was!
