@Teango: Very interesting to read your last post. As the method miner I am I eagerly look forward to your final evaluation of your methods.

I'm so sorry for your tinnitus. Really hope it fades away. But you definitely have the right spirit. Let your inner Shiva listen to some serious Russian.

Curious: What do you mean by basic fluency in reading? Is it related to vocabulary (i.e. understanding texts), or is it more like the ability to look at the script and "hear the pronunciation", or something else?

You're my hero Teango!

Arigato, Medialis-san! My concept of "basic fluency" is probably a little fluffy rather than rigorous, to be honest, but it helps as a basic guideline. It's approximately around the B2/C1 mark (which Prof Arguelles advocates as a "decent level"), and I like to separate this out into each of the 4 main traditional skill sets (i.e. reading, listening, speaking, and writing), like a range of 4 big mountain peaks.

When I consistently achieve approximately 95% reading comprehension (i.e. in both vocabulary and understanding), which would theoretically happen for me around the "8000 passive new words recognised and clicked" mark, I find myself close enough to basic fluency in reading. Once I reach this stage, I drop the intensive studies, and rely on extensive L&R/L-R alone to bring my listening skills up to roughly the same level. This is harder to qualify and estimate, but seems to correspond roughly to the time I've noted down for listening only to 8000 new passive words in my study-and-click logs. It also becomes a hell of a lot more comfortable and enjoyable to watch tv, listen to podcasts/radio, and follow fast-paced natural conversations.

Once I reach this level in listening as well, I stop L&R/L-R altogether, and switch to either listening to OR reading native materials. This is a major milestone for me, and it's such a cool feeling to be able to dive and delve into literature and movies without any additional crutches, just like a native would do at home. Makes sense to me, anyhow - and I feel like planting a flag at this plateau and yodelling across the mountain range. :)

It's at this first real base-camp that I commence my "speaking and writing" stage with the help of a native speaker (my Gurkha mountain guide, if you will), initially using the previous logs as study guides for bridging over to active communication skills and investigating new phrases and grammar together. This is much easier with the sounds of the language (i.e. the djinn) more firmly set in my head to help me out. And with a natural feel for sentence flow and grammar, without any of the otherwise unnecessary early hard graft, I feel ready to start the climb to eventually reach natural basic fluency in speaking and writing later on. I'm not exactly sure how to measure this for active skills, but I'm pretty certain that chatting away fluently in the language for hours without causing any real strain for native listeners would constitute part of that definition. In this regard, I think it's really quite important to try and perfect pronunciation along the way too.

I'm currently finding it almost impossible to focus on anything at all due to severe continuous ringing in my ears since the ear infection hit a few weeks ago. German ENT specialists tell me this is most likely a permanent and incurable condition, but I remain ever hopeful that it will improve over time.

It's difficult to describe to anyone who doesn't suffer with tinnitus 24 hours a day, but if I could summon up a picture, at best, it's a little like trying to do your homework on a busy runway with jet-engines taxiing nearby. When it gets worse, often due to stress or tiredness, it's more like nails shrilly clawing down a blackboard, inharmoniously and incessantly drilling and screeching inside my head (even during sleep).

I really want to get back to studying languages as soon as possible, of course, but will need to take some more time out to learn how to deal with this new challenge and find a way to get some sleep once again. As many have already suggested, sometimes life's hurdles can help open up your consciousness to new opportunities and hidden strengths. And hopefully, my visit to Ireland next week will provide some fresh perspective on all this too.

So sorry for these postponements, everyone, and thanks once again for all the good wishes and support. I'm determined to try to find a way to beat this thing and will be back soon. And no slacking whilst I'm away! ;)
