I have never been at an AA-meeting, but I have seen so many of them in American films that I feel like I have, and invariably there will be a "I am Judy, and I'm an alcoholic" scene.

So I thought we could follow that pattern and use it to introduce ourselves, and see who of us are doing Russian - and a what level.

When we gain enough confidence, we could even start posting in Russian - as is the intention with this room :-) Anyway, here goes:

Origin and level
I am Norwegian, and have tried to learn Russian since March (after two previous failed attempts). I do not even know how to decribe my level - it is not complete beginner, even though I still struggle with the Russian letters, but I am at a very basic level. My main problem is that with a full time job and a lot of family commitments I do not have any free time. I therefore do the bulk of my studying on the train to work (a 10 minutes ride), walking to and from the train and while I do my housework or gardening. I listen to Russian quite a lot, but I never get time to actually sit down and do any proper studying.

Reason for studying Russian
Through my work I deal with an international organisation which is Paris based, and where so far only German, English and French have been official languages. Now Russian is being used more and more, partly because Russia has become a member, and partly because several Eastern European members speak only Russian and their own language.

I also have Russian speaking friends in Ukraine, and I want to be able to communicate with them. And of course, after having studied the language for a little while you just want to learn it because it is fun.

Main linguistic challenges
As mentioned, I am at a very, very basic level, so the alphabet is still difficult, and since I am extremely impatient, and would like to read Anna Karenina tomorrow, I struggle when I try to read unknown texts because the words are not the same as in the dictionary, and I have not mastered even the simplest of grammar points yet. UHRGG. Totally frustrating. Will get there though. Loved Datsunkings word in another post. "This is war, and I'm going to win it"

So who else is out there trying to learn Russian? Why do you do it, where are you from and how far have you got. Good advice is also welcome!!

Origin and level
I'm one of the fossils on this forum and have been studying languages long before I joined HTLAL. I began studying Russian only a month ago but over the past several years accumulated a certain knowledge of its structure because of my interest in comparative Slavonic linguistics which arose through studying several Slavonic languages to varying levels of competency (I don't consider myself fluent in any of them but I can come off as fluent in Polish and Slovak under the right conditions). Right now I'm a beginner, but an uneven one in that my active abilities already lag noticeably my passive ones. However this disparity doesn't bother me as I explain in the next section.

Reason for studying Russian
See here and here. My efforts are a means to an end. Learning the language for its own sake or to gain insight about the associated culture while interacting with Russians doesn't fit in the big picture.

Main linguistic challenges
Since my goal is to develop a certain passive ability in the language, the trickiest part for me is to minimize the interference from other Slavonic languages. This includes studying it to the point so that I often become aware of false friends and properly understand a text or explanation in Russian rather than misunderstand it because I got lazy and relied unduly on my background in other Slavonic languages.

@Chung: I am so happy that you have joined in, even if it is for strictly utilitarian reasons :-) I am sure you
learning Russian will be a huge asset to us all.

Привет! Я только что нашла эту сеть, но я надеюсь, что могу говорить по-русски с вами. Я изучаю
русский язык в университете. Я изучала этот язык два года, но я хочу интенсивно изучать русский
язык летом этого года. :)

This is correct but sounds unnatural
I would write it like this.

Ранее я изучала этот язык в течение двух лет, но этим летом я хочу более интенсивно заняться
русским языком.

Good luck )

Hello everyone!

I'm Dutch and new to this forum! A few days ago, I've been looking into learning a new
language. My motor license is relatively close to being done and this is the primary
reason for me to learn Russian (beside the fun part ofcourse!). The goal is to master
Russian enough to read Cyrillic
script and to have a basic conversation.

Before finding this forum, I've been doing some research. It felt best to start of
with pronouncing Cyrillic script and starting to follow some basic YouTube classes
focusing words and basic phrases.

There is also the urge to continue studying German. Once upon a time, I had 3 years of
German education. Unfortunately I did not connect in a positive way with our German
teacher. Even though I barely made my exams, which I believe must have been some kind
of pity, the real understanding came years later.

For anyone that feels like chatting up on the matter, someone that has questions or
want to go at this together, feel free to add me on skype 'NoSkillzzNLD, the
Netherlands'.

,o/ Have a good night y'all
