Amen to that. Though getting older doesn't seem to help the very least...

Dear me! Solfrid Cristin don't say so - now another hope is vanished...

When I am 64, I wish to speak Chinese indistinguishably from a native. Nay you say? I'll prove it...in 36 years.

If I can use any of my target languages as well as English (or anywhere close) in another 26 years, I'm happy. Safe bets would be German and Spanish.

I don't like to set my goals too high because I know it's important to be realistic.
I'd really love to achieve basic fluency in French. I'd like to get back to my German
studies and get to a solid B2 in that language as well. I'd also like to deepen my
knowledge of Arabic and Hebrew. Lately Spanish has been interesting me since it's
pretty widely spoken here and I'd enjoy picking that up as well.

Blah, blah, blah. Mind the fact that many famous people seemed to have unrealistic goals. And what? They have, more or less, but achieved them! The only thing we have to remember is that there won't be a fortune teller who will wave a magic wand and voilà - only our hard efforts will decide about our success.

"Set your goals high enough so that if you fall, you fall among the stars."

Just figured I'd say that :P

Welp... I have 44 years until I hit that mark...

Hopefully:

Advanced fluency in
Spanish
German
Russian
Italian
Portuguese
^^In order of importance.
Basic:
French
Japanese

That should be more than enough to keep me busy.

To be a little more defined...

I want to be able to know them well enough so that if I wake up and have to move there, I can:

Read damn near anything, watch tv, listen to radio/music, etc without it being a chore.

French and Japanese, enough to enjoy myself, meet others, talk about cars (Japan <3) read, I'll allow myself to make mistakes, I'm not looking for absolute perfection, just enough not to have a barrier at all.

You may be disappointed, but the only goal I've set for myself for when I'm 64 is have two or three kids that didn't become serial killers. I guess I should get hands-on before time runs out... :)

By that time, all of my languages should have been put to some real use or forgotten, so I'd like to set a closer goal. How about when I'm 44?, or in 4 years' time? That has the advantage of being the same for everyone, and my language dreams are not that far... 4 years hence I should be officially (as in exam-earned pips on my uniform) at C2 level in English, German and Russian. As for Japanese, I'll probably drop it completely before getting anywhere. I don't think I'll take up any more languages (or retry Japanese) unless I fall in love with a wonderful woman, or something else goes in completely unexpected ways.

See you back here to check in 4 years? :)
