Had a Dutch lesson yesterday, only to realize that I've let the language slide way too
long: I can recognize having learned words and I understand them, but they don't actively come to my mind anymore or take very long to do so. It's annoying, but on the bright side it should only take several hours of Dutch conversations in order to re- activate most of what I had learned. Also, yesterday I finished a Chinese book that I had been reading for ages (my Chinese reading speed is abysmal): Book 23: "自杀" by Edouard Levé. This is a Chinese translation of the book "Suicide", but I didn't know that when I bought it. The language is quite easy, talking about every day life for the most part, so that this was an easy if slow read. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

The Tadoku has been very good for me; within 2 weeks I read 213 pages in my weakest
reading languages: 72 pages of Greek and 141 pages of Chinese. It's unprecedented for me to read so much in Chinese in this time frame because I tend to take 4-5 minutes a page and quickly lose interest, but somehow the Tadoku really motivated me this time. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I haven't updated in a while because I've had very little time for languages, and most of my free time has
been devoted to preparing for interpretation contracts and working on another significant personal project :) Although these activities don't constitute learning languages per se, they are definitely language related! I continue, however, to read German here and there online, write emails, and watch the occasional online video. As for Estonian, I don't know if I'm going to continue, but I would like to point other learners to a nice resource called Keeleklikk. Just got back from a trip to Britain and Greece. Greece was fun, but I was at a
conference all the time and didn't have many occasions to speak Greek. I spoke a bit of Dutch, French and Italian with the other participants, and a bit of Greek with the hotel staff, but that's it, and now I'm ca. 20 hours behind my plan for the year... I did read two books while in Britain: Book 25: "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert A. Heinlein - possibly the best science fiction book I've read. Book 26: "Il profeta" by Khalil Gibran, in a bilingual edition. I can see where all the quotes come from that are circulating on the internet, but I think the book itself is over-hyped. 1 person has voted this message useful |
