My goals are relatively practical:
Read 10000 pages of German Watch 300 films and TV shows (90 mins TV = 1 movie) Avoid English language media as far as possible: stop reading The Guardian and other English language newspapers, switch to Die Zeit (that will be hard); no more English shows or movies (glad Breaking Bad is finished!). I am going to be in Australia for one month visiting family and so I'll have a lot of English in that month, but other than that I intend to avoid English as much as possible for one year and see where I end up. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||||||||

I'm going to study at the University of Queensland (Australia) for a year, so I'm pretty sure I'll improve my English. Spanish Keep practicing Esperanto Use Pasporta Servo while traveling Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Catalan & Galician Luckly I'll find someone to practice at the University. Otherwise I'll keep with my internet based approach. Japanese Achieve a good conversational level because I want to visit Japan before coming back to Brazil in 2015. Libras - Brazilian Sing Language I found a teacher who is helping me practice it via webcam. I already have a basic level in it, I just need to practice it and improve my vocabulary and fluency. Italian If I find some Italians there, I'll improve my Italian. If I find no one, I won't struggle, I don't have motivation to learn it. Indonesian/Malay Starting it from scratch right now. I want to learn as much as possible until July, when I intend to visit those countries. Then I'll keep improving. Thai Same as Indonesian/Malay, starting it from scratch, learn as much as possible until July because I intend to visit Thailad too. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

French: Get to a good B1 level. Visit France
Russian: Get to A2. Be more familiar with reading cyrillic English: Find some friends to practice. I would like to start studying another language, but I dont think I can handle more than 2. And also, I still don't know which one I would chose. The options are many: Greek (because of the beauty of Greece and the greeks - lovely persons), Japanese (wife's family), Indonesian or Esperanto (curiosity), Polish (great persons, and I have friends over there), Dutch (I like they way it sounds) Edited by Cristianoo on 03 January 2014 at 2:54am 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||||||||

This thread is a great prompt to get focused!
German My plan is to complete The Assimil course and after following it up with something like Hugo's German in Three Months I'd like to start working with native materials, especially novels and short stories. Chinese Finish learning all of the characters used in the Assimil course and then switch to intermediate textbooks and readers. I've been held back by my inability to read or write Chinese so I'd like to open up some new ground there. French Once I'm on to native materials in German I'd like to give French a go, starting with, you guessed it, Assimil! Depending on how things go I'd like to do both Assimil courses within the year, though that might be a bit ambitious. Indonesian and Javanese These are on hold at the moment, to be returned to when I need them. Or rather, when I need Indonesian as Javanese is more of an added extra for when I travel. I have loads of Indo books but it's hard to get motivated to read them when there's so many English language classics that I've not read yet. If I start to get on top of Chinese I'd love to start something new like Persian, but this would largely depend on how much time I have to put towards this hobby. I took a beginner's class last year and despite giving it up after realizing that literally the entire time would be spent learning the script, it really took my interest and I've looked into some self study materials. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||
