PROGRESS IN German, WEEK 12/52 OF THE 2010 TAC CHALLENGE
SUMMARY L-R: 12 hours (Das Parfum*** by Patrick Süskind) Grammar: 2 hours (review of strong/weak verbs and adjective endings) ———————————— Week Total: 14 hours LR Total: 126.7 hours Year Total: 285.8 hours WANDERLUST CONFESSION BOX Japanese: 155/2042 kanji, lesson 8/56, 14% coverage (Reviewing the Kanji; Heisig book for correct stroke order) TEANGO’S WORD/PHRASE OF THE WEEK "der Anhänger/die Anhängerin" (supporter, fan) - not a very unusual word to be fair, but I just can't help but picture lots of little fans "hanging on" fanatically to the coat tails of some unfortunate celebrity who got caught shopping in C&A. NOTES I'm still navigating my way through the asteroids and "sleeping policemen" (British English for "speed bumps"), but somehow managed to get a dozen hours of LR in all the same (mainly over the weekend to be honest, and in drips and drabs throughout the rest of the week). Next week will be even more hectic, as I have several business trips lined up, and will be mainly hotel hopping and airport lounging around meetings. I'll no doubt be absent from the forum for several days whilst sorting all these things out, but I look forward to reading through all the new posts and threads on my return. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

PROGRESS IN German, WEEK 13/52 OF THE 2010 TAC CHALLENGE
SUMMARY L-R: 0.5 hours (Das Parfum*** by Patrick Süskind) Preparation: 3 hours (R&D for a new programme for prosody training) ———————————— Week Total: 3.5 hours LR Total: 127.2 hours Year Total: 289.3 hours WANDERLUST CONFESSION BOX Same as last week, I just kept up with Japanese kanji reviews. TEANGO’S WORD/PHRASE OF THE WEEK "der Stollen" (tunnel) - I was a little bemused for a while, wondering why people would be walking through a Christmas cake at all, but all was soon revealed and my confusion evaporated in the end when I discovered that it also meant tunnel, which explains the shape of this interesting cake! NOTES I only just got back this evening and am quite exhausted...just enough time to check in with the forum, read some posts, and write up a brief log for the week. I only managed half an hour of LR this week due to work commitments, but I'm happy to report that I'm very near the end of Das Parfum now! :) I've decided to do some prosody training every day before I start my Listening-Reading, and will start this next week. I've named this Copycat's Chorus. I've already worked out a good programme to practice with, but now I need to find some good quality natural dialogues in German from which to take my prosody practice sentences. Clear dialogues from German comedy films would be great, any suggestions? I'll finish up tonight with something interesting I noticed several days ago. I went for a little forest walk last weekend, and along the way there was a big wooden sign engraved with an old poem in German entitled "Abendlied" by Matthias Claudius (18th Century): "Der Mond ist aufgegangen, die goldnen Sternlein prangen am Himmel hell und klar; der Wald steht schwarz und schweiget, und aus den Wiesen steiget der weiße Nebel wunderbar. Wie ist die Welt so stille und in der Dämmrung Hülle so traulich und so hold! Als eine stille Kammer, wo ihr des Tages Jammer verschlafen und vergessen sollt. Sehr ihr den Mond dort stehen? Er ist nur halb zu sehen und ist doch rund und schön. So sind wohl manche Sachen, die wir getrost belachen, weil unsre Augen sie nicht sehn. Wir stolze Menschenkinder sind eitel arme Sünder und wissen gar nicht viel; wir spinnen Luftgespinste und suchen viele Künste und kommen weiter von dem Ziel. Gott, laß uns Dein Heil schauen, auf nichts Vergänglichs trauen, nicht Eitelkeit uns freun! Laß uns einfältig werden und vor Dir hier auf Erden wie Kinder fromm und fröhlich sein! I remember seeing this before, but the last time I glanced over it I understood a lot less. This time around however I recognised over 15 new unique words, something like 7-8% more, and could translate nearly everything...and all this just from intermittent passive Listening-Reading over the past several weeks alone. And there was I starting to worry that I wasn't making any progress really, but it seems very much to the contrary that I've really been pacing ahead and can understand a lot more now. Hey Teango! It's inspiring to read about your passive progress. If you keep it up, you'll soon walk by wooden signs, and just read the poems without noticing it's in another language. :D

This would be so ideal, especially if I don't bump into a tree, trip over a knotted root, or get my foot stuck down a rabbit hole whilst absorbed in my new-found state of language bliss. Sometimes my mind can wander far and wide whilst thinking about languages, but my local forest likes instead to bring everything back down sharply to earth and keep me literally on my toes! I'm glad you like the name of my prosody training. It involves a whole bundle of listening and chorusing exercises concerned with mastering the prosody and dynamics of a single sentence or short segment of dialogue each day. I have lots of other cool 'n' catchy names for specific aspects of my studies and parts of my language learning programme too. However I feel a little shy and embarrassed to share them all with the world right now...perhaps later though, when I can prove that some of them actually work... ;) Edited by Teango on 03 April 2010 at 5:48pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I've just had a brilliant 4-hour conversation with a large group of lovely German strangers in a restaurant. We spoke about lots of things, ranging from the modern dissolution of the family unit to Russian ballet and opera, and I managed to stay at the centre of it all and speak the most during all this time. It was fantastic...despite one or two fumblings for words, I was able to understand nearly everything and make myself clearly understood too...and I even sang...twice! Congrats! Now I'm excited as well. -You're doing the real thing now! (actually, you can probably call yourself a diglot now.) :D :D Btw, do you just walk up to some strangers at a restaurant and start to speak with them?
