"Island" (in Danish), is an island and a country, but NOT the word for an island - it's a false friend!

yes, Island (Iceland) is also called Island in German. But the German word for 'island' is much longer: Insel (which probably comes from the same root as is' in English island).
Ice in Danish is 'Is' and 'Island' is a country with ice, but in High German ice is "Eis", so the country name must be imported, either directly from the Nordic countries or through Low German. New word: helado = icecream in Spanish 1 person has voted this message useful | |
